Engineering Services is a department dedicated to providing services to internal and external stakeholders through multiple divisions including Construction Management, Integrated Facility Services, Facilities and Operations, Vehicle Fleet Services, Roadway Design and Construction, and Stormwater. This position is assigned to the Facilities and Operations Division, which is responsible for a diverse number of functions and activities that serves the entire City organization such as day-to-day and preventive operations and maintenance of facilities, customer-based service deliverables, special events and meeting set-ups, emergency response in inclement weather, disasters, or emergencies, and critical equipment management.
This class is the first level in a two-level Trades Maintenance Series devoted to providing repair, maintenance and equipment operation for maintenance or operational function. Work may include performing preventive maintenance and repairs to building functions and/or grounds; operating assigned equipment; maintaining cleanliness of work area, tools and equipment; and following safety policies and procedures.
We are looking to employ reliable individuals with knowledge of the basic Trades Maintenance principals to provide exceptional support for the Facilities and Operations Maintenance program. Must have a strong work ethic with positive orientation and willing to learn and grow to prepare for the potential of future advancement.
  • Perform advanced maintenance, repairs, and certifications of backflows devices
  • Work closely with contractors on Fire Alarm Systems and Fire Sprinkler Systems for City of Raleigh facilities
  • Operate required tools and equipment; performs work in accordance with operational and safety policies and procedures
  • Receive, prioritize and schedule maintenance and work requests
  • Make sure schedules and specific dates are met to ensure the City is in compliance at all times regarding Fire Alarm Systems, Sprinkler Systems and Backflows
  • Respond to customer requests and concerns
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and identify issues
  • Recommend and implement corrective action, repair and/or equipment replacement to resolve issues
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain records, logs, reports and documentation
Education and Experience:
Associate's Degree in area of assignment and three years of experience in one or more areas related to Plumbing or Fire Alarm Maintenance
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation
Licensing/Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License Class C or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
Preferred Qualificatiions:
  • Backflows certification is highly recommended or ability to obtain the certification within the first 6 months of hire.
  • Plumbing certification, education or experience
  • Fire Alarm and Fire Sprinkler background is recommended
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Standard practices, methods and materials of trade skill and maintenance
  • Able to operate assigned tools and equipment
  • To recognize occupational hazards and apply safety principles and practices
  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisors, the public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information
  • Strong work ethic

ADA and Other Requirements
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
