Job Title: Library Assistant

Department: All Departments plus Bookmobile

Category: Full Time 1 FTE

Supervisor: Directors/Team Leads

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Team Leads and Directors, this position provides friendly, high-quality customer service to Library patrons and assists ALL patrons in using library services and facilities. As well as perform para-professional library duties, clerical work and assist Librarians in all library departments.

This position is responsible for clerical work in billing, damages of all library materials, and some processing of library materials. There is a three (3) month probation period for this position.

Required Education:

High School Diploma preferred but not required

Job Responsibilities/Duties:

- Actively welcome all members of the community to Nicholas P. Sims Library and help to raise awareness of all services and resources offered.

- Work in any customer service department, including Children, Circulation, etc.

- Process new patron accounts, including in-city, out-of-city, and Tex Share.

- Charge/discharge all library materials.

- Sort and shelve library materials and shift materials as required.

- Shelf-Read (check item order) materials.

- Assist with the inventory process.

- Manage patron accounts and collect revenue.

- Calls patron regarding lost and damaged items.

- Check all library materials for damages.

- Assist with opening/closing duties, including unlocking doors, turning on and logging onto computers, raising the flag, printing date-due stickers, etc.

- Assist in cleaning and replacing janitorial supplies as needed.

- Assist patrons in finding library materials and offer research assistance as required.

- Trains patrons on library catalog usage and database usage and guides patrons to the correct location.

- Answers and monitors phone calls.

- Attends and participates in meetings, conferences, seminars, and committees as budget allows.

- Attends and participates in weekly staff meetings and training sessions.

- Adheres to departmental, personnel, and safety rules and regulations.

- Adheres to library policies and procedures.

- All other special projects and duties as assigned.

Detailed Job Duties:

Bookmobile Department:

- Drives Bookmobile to scheduled stops

- Monitors staff and patrons on the vehicle

- Assists with necessary training

- Coordinate the schedule of Bookmobile stops under the supervision of the Directors

- Performs daily pre-departure vehicle checks

- Notes all mechanical and safety issues

- Inform Directors of needed repairs and maintenance

- Delivers Bookmobile for maintenance and repairs as needed

- Sanitize the inside of the vehicle

- Keep vehicle clean inside and out

- Monitor attendance for reporting purposes

- Leads inventory process for supplies and library materials on Bookmobile

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

- Filing and sorting skills

- Typing (35 w.p.m.)

- Knowledge of library procedures

- Knowledge of computers, online databases, and Microsoft Office Suite

- Excellent customer service skills

- Excellent communication skills

- Ability to work well with a wide range of people

- Previous library experience, including library automated systems, preferred but not required

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work is performed in a public setting with constant contact with many individuals daily.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The work environment is usually quiet but may be noisy at times. Employees must be able to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.

Programs may be conducted outside on the lawn, on the Bookmobile, and/or held at other community facilities. Staff will be required to empty the book return box located outside and carry materials inside the building.

Tools and Equipment Used:

The essential functions of this position require using a phone, computer and copy machine, fax machines, printers, and working knowledge of integrated library systems (ILS) and applications, Internet online databases, scanners, office software, and email.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

- This is primarily an office classification, although standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required.

- Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment.

- Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen

- Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone

- Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information.

- Employees may be required to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds or heavier with the use of proper equipment.

- Employees work in a library environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances.

- Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

Conditions of Employment:

- Must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state-required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state-required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law).

- Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check.

- Must be able to reach above shoulder level and stoop below knee level.

- Must be legally sighted and able to hear to be able to assist patrons.

- Must be able to work a rotating schedule, including evenings and weekends.

- Must be able to work outside of regular business hours as required.

10.05 Driver Policy:

All employees driving for library business must adhere to the following criteria at all times:

- Drivers must have a current, valid driver’s license for the state in which the employee

performs his/her driving duties.

- Drivers must maintain active auto insurance on personal vehicles.

- Drivers must maintain a clean driving record, i.e., must remain insurable under the

library’s liability insurance policy.

- Observe all safety, traffic, and criminal laws of the state.

- No driver may consume alcohol or illegal drugs while driving for library business.

- Any illegal, dangerous, or other conduct while driving that would tend to place the lives

or property of others at risk is prohibited.

- Drivers must maintain, on file, in the Library, a copy of a current driver's license and

insurance card.

- Any employee who violates any part of this policy or who becomes uninsurable as a

driver will be subject to reassignment and/or disciplinary action, up to and possibly

including termination from employment.

- All employees with driving duties for the library must sign an agreement attesting to their

agreement and understanding of this policy.

Employees must sign an agreement form stating that they agree in the event that they are ever found to be uninsurable or lack a clean driving record or a valid/current driver’s license, that if necessary, they will accept whatever alternative assignment the Library has available, and that they understand that a reduction in pay, change in hours, change in duties, and/or change in work location may result from the reassignment. Further, they understand that the Library does not and cannot guarantee that in the event of a problem with a driver’s license, driving record, or insurability as a driver, and that if no reassignment is possible, termination of employment may occur.
