SCHEDULE
Working days may vary to include days, nights and weekends

*The annual salary range for this role is between $60,340 - $71,000. The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, operational needs, market demands and internal equity. The starting salary range is subject to review by Human Resources and may require City Manager approval.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE JOB:

The Boca Raton Library provides outstanding library services, resources, and programs that meet the educational, recreational, cultural, and informational needs of the City of Boca Raton. Public Services includes operations across four service centers - the Spanish River Library, the Downtown Library, Mobile Library Services, and the Digital Library.

Under the direction of the Librarian III - Program Services, the Librarian II assigned to Youth Services functions as a supervisor for professional personnel, paraprofessional personnel, and volunteers. The Librarian II - Youth Services is primarily responsible for the section's administration and operations including youth and afterschool programs, material displays and recommendations, learning tools, activities, learning spaces and more.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Plans, organizes, directs, and supervises the Library's Youth Services section, including youth and afterschool programs, teen volunteer programs; youth material displays and reading recommendations; learning tools and activities for youth; youth learning spaces, teen rooms, and workspaces; school outreach and youth group visits; and literacy training for children and caregivers;
  • Maintains excellent communication and builds relationships with the Public by responding to customer feedback, suggestions, and complaints.
  • Maintains excellent relations with the Youth Services team members, the Library leadership team, Recreation Services and other City Departments, and Library stakeholders through regular communication, meetings, and reporting;
  • Oversees the hiring, orientation, training, supervision, scheduling, professional development, and regular evaluation of all Youth Services professional and paraprofessional personnel; oversees the selection, orientation, training, supervision and scheduling of Youth Services volunteer or intern personnel;
  • Supervises and participates in the development, preparation and presentation of library programs, classes, events, and projects relevant to Youth Services, with focus on literacy and access, childhood development, and self-learning opportunities for youth;
  • Develops classes and trains the Public and library team members in early childhood and youth literacy skills, stages in childhood development, interactive program presentation skills, and communication skills relevant to youth and teens;
  • Researches, evaluates, and compiles bibliographies, online content, and other subject material, as assigned;
  • Works with Library collection and programming teams to promote Library materials, classes, programs, or events;
  • Serves as needed as a member of the library leadership team to determine and implement library policy, procedures, and programs;
  • Collects, analyzes, and reports Youth Services statistics;
  • Assists in preparing, analyzing, and administering budgets in assigned areas;
  • Communicates and enforces the Library Rules of Conduct, library policies, and procedures; and maintains order at the Library facilities.


Knowledge of:

  • Professional library principles, practices, methods, and techniques
  • The relevant literature, methods, trends, and developments in the field of library services, childhood and teen development, youth literature, and youth education.

Skilled in:

  • The use of computers and software applications to a high degree of proficiency
  • Communication; expressing ideas effectively, in conversation, in writing, and during presentations. Demonstrating an excellent command of grammar and ability to write, edit, and proofread for accuracy.
  • Administration and organization
  • Research and a high degree of knowledge of information sources

Ability to:

  • Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate the work of professional, paraprofessional, and/or clerical staff and volunteers;
  • On occasion, work a flexible work schedule that includes weekdays, weekends, and evenings as needed.
  • Research and analyze administrative library problems, and to make recommendations for their resolution;
  • Interpret library mission and objectives to community groups and the public;
  • Maintain administrative and fiscal records, prepare reports, and collect and report statistics;
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Work independently or as a part of a team, and to organize and lead projects;
  • Plan, organize, and direct the work of professional, paraprofessional, and volunteers;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, library patrons, approved community partners, and others;
  • Assist in the establishment of library policies and to provide accurate interpretation to community groups, public officials, professional groups, and the general public, as needed;
  • Represent the library at professional meetings and to participate in the development or improvement of professional library methods and standards, when assigned;
  • Work independently, prioritize duties and tasks, and make sound decisions with minimal supervision;
  • Tolerate occasional to moderate exposure to dust.
  • Act as Building Administrator in Charge, Librarian III, or Library Manager, as requested.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Master's Degree in library and/or information science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association required;
  • Three (3) years' experience working in public or school library with children or teens;
  • Two (2) years supervisory experience.
  • Possession of a valid State of Florida Class 'E' driver's license
