Reporting to the Director of Interlibrary Loan (ILL), Electronic, and Technical Services of the Louis Calder Memorial Library on the University of Miami (UM) Medical Campus, the Emerging Technologies Librarian collaborates with librarians, academic departments, UMIT, Academic Technologies, and other units on campus and in the Libraries to evaluate, implement, assess, and promote emerging technologies, applications, and online tools relevant to medical education, medical research, and clinical practice. The Emerging Technologies Librarian will bridge the gap between traditional library services and cutting-edge technological advancements to enhance the educational, research, and clinical experiences of students, educators and/or clinical faculty, and researchers at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, UHealth, and Jackson Health System (JHS).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performance

  • Maintain and expand Calder’s website (Calder Library | University of Miami Libraries) to promote and support the Medical School’s academic, clinical, and research components (significant task) in collaboration with the Web & Application Development unit of the Library Information Technology department.
  • Manage Electronic Resources for Medical Library subscriptions.
  • Maintain statistics and create statistical reports for Calder’s website usage.
  • Keep abreast of emerging technologies, trends, and innovations in the medical field, such as virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, telemedicine, wearable devices, etc., and evaluate the relevance, and potential impact of said technologies on medical education, research, and clinical practice.
  • Collaborate with educator faculty and medical librarian faculty, researchers, and students to identify opportunities for incorporating emerging technologies into teaching, learning, and research activities.
  • Design and implement technology-based initiatives to enhance the accessibility and usability of medical information resources.
  • Develop, promote, and assess innovative online tools and related services for library learners; identify learning and engagement opportunities to support student research and promote student success.
  • Identify, monitor, assess, and relay information about new and emerging technologies of interest to the Libraries Leadership, including recommendations for adoption, management, and training.
  • Work with other librarians to create and implement online learning modules to support both information and digital literacy.
  • Collaborate with other librarians on creating research impact and bibliometrics reports.
  • Collaborate with other departments or institutions on interdisciplinary projects that involve technology integration in medical education, research, or patient care.
  • Communicate effectively, and work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and others.

Research Duties

  • Coordinate with Calder’s Learning, Research, and Clinical Information Services department, biomedical data librarian, technical services librarians, and staff to identify emerging resources for medical education, research, and clinical practice.
  • Provide metrics and other evaluation criteria to support data-driven collection decisions, and to implement practices and tools for increasing decision-making efficiency and accuracy.
  • Cultivate an awareness of Scholarship@Miami (UM’s research information platform) in relation to bibliometrics and research impact.

Service

  • Network, collaborate, and actively participate in local, regional, national, and international organizations.
  • Represent the University of Miami Libraries in local, state-wide, regional, national, and international organizations as appropriate.
  • Serve on/participate in University organizations, committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate.
  • Participate in and/or lead library-level committees, task forces, and/or special projects.
  • Promote library services and resources in response to the training, curriculum, and research needs of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine faculty, staff, students, and affiliates.

Other Duties

  • Additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Minimum three years of experience in an academic health science library.
  • Ability to fulfill the scholarly and service expectations of a non-tenure track librarian faculty position, including participation on university committees, professional development, and professional organization service.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and productively with others and independently.

Preferred

  • Demonstrated experience managing projects and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated awareness of scholarly communication trends within higher education.
  • Experience using a programming language (PHP, Python, etc,) and a relational database (MySQL, Postgres, etc.).
  • Experience in the deployment and configuration of software applications.
  • Experience with Library Management Systems / Library Integrated Systems.
  • Experience in developing scripts to interact with application programming interfaces (APIs).
