General Description / Primary Purpose:The Thomas G. Carpenter Library at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida is looking for a librarian to manage the Allen Lastinger Center for Florida History. This position is a full-time, non-tenured library faculty position. Reporting to the Head of Special Collections and University Archives, the librarian will be responsible for overall management and development of the Center’s collections, programs, and personnel.
Housed in the Thomas G. Carpenter Library, the Allen Lastinger Center for Florida History will stand out as a premier Center for knowledge about Florida’s history, become a hub for academic activity, and a global resource for scholars, researchers and community members seeking to expand their knowledge about the history of the great state of Florida. It will create an interdisciplinary Center for academic excellence supporting multiple areas of the university, diverse areas of study and degree programs, and research in all facets of Florida history.
· Manages and develops the collections, services, exhibitions, and programs for the Center.· Oversees the processing, preservation, and storage of collection materials.· Promotes awareness of the Center and use of the collections through exhibitions, presentations, public events, publications, and other outreach activities.· Conceptualizes, develops, and curates exhibitions to promote the Center’s collection. Oversees exhibition research, design, content development, and installation for onsite and traveling exhibitions. Collaborates with Digital Projects & Preservation Department to create digital exhibitions.· Coordinates the creation, design, and maintenance of the Center’s website.· Coordinates loans of materials from the collections for exhibition, display, or other purposes.· Ensures physical and intellectual control over collections by creating and maintaining collection documentation relating to accessions and deaccessions. Working with the Resource Acquisition & Discovery Department, ensure all the maps, prints, and rare books are accessible in the library’s integrated library system.· In collaboration with other campus partners, organize an annual Florida history symposium.· Provides instruction for classes and individual users in the Center’s Reading Room.· Supervises library staff, interns, and student OPS workers including hiring, assigning responsibilities, training, and evaluating.· Serves as liaison for assigned academic department(s). In collaboration with teaching and research faculty in the colleges, develops select areas of the library’s subject resources by identifying and selecting new materials for the collection and by evaluating existing materials for possible withdrawal from the collection. Engages with departmental faculty to better understand and meet their library needs, develops collegial partnerships, and promotes library services and resources.· Contributes to overall collection development through participation in the evaluation and development of the collection and in the review and selection of library resources as appropriate.

Job Function:· Participates in the planning and policy making bodies of the library and University as appropriate.· Serves on library, University, and state-wide committees or project teams as appropriate in consultation with supervisor.· Maintains awareness of current campus issues and developments in library and information science.· Participates in training and professional development activities.

Faculty Position Required Qualifications:· Master of Library Science from an ALA or equivalent accredited program.· Academic and/or research library experience providing public services and/or managing historical collections, including acquisitions, curating exhibitions, instruction, outreach, donor relations, and/or providing research services.· Experience with handling, storing, displaying, and maintaining maps, historic prints, and rare books.· Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills including oral and written communication.· Ability to work well with deadlines; work independently; and work collaboratively with students, faculty, administrators, and the general public.· Excellent planning, analytical, and organizational skills including the ability to adapt and work creatively in a complex academic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
· Extensive knowledge of Florida history, particularly of the Northeast Florida region.· Knowledge of professional museum standards and practices, particularly in creating exhibitions.· Experience teaching with primary sources.· Working knowledge of library technologies, particularly digitization, digital systems, library catalogs, and metadata.
Background Check: This position requires a level II background check, which includes fingerprinting. In conjunction with the University’s policy, this position may also require a credit check.
