JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
Perform responsible secretarial and clerical work for the Public Defender Attorneys.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the general supervision of the Department Head or designee.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which an employee may be expected to perform.
- With reasonable speed and accuracy and with fluency in legal terminology, transcribe dictation, type legal briefs, affidavits, writs, subpoenas, and other legal papers; and compose and type correspondences and directed by the Public Defender Attorneys.
- Coordinate court scheduling with Public Defender Attorneys.
- Prepare documents relating to prison reimbursement, including documentation of all Public Defender activities on each case.
- Ordering supplies, business cards, and other miscellaneous equipment
- Schedule hearings, motions, pre-trials, and sentences; make appointments and perform public contact work
- Perform related work as required.
DESIRABLE EDUCATION, ESPERIENCE and/or QUALIFICATIONS: An employee in this class, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following training, qualifications and/or experience.
- Graduation from an accredited high school, including supplemented by course in typing and computer literacy
- Considerable experience of three (3) to five (5) years in performing reasonable clerical work involving a court or a law office
- Reasonable knowledge of modern computer programs
- Reasonable knowledge of modern office and bookkeeping practices and procedures
- Considerable speed and accuracy in transcription dictation
- Ability to prepare a variety of legal and other written records and reports
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work is primarily indoors and requires standing and sitting for extended periods
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds
- Must be able to hear and speak over the phone and in one-on-one communication needs
- Must be able to see and notice the needs of clients
