This part-time, temporary position allows for a maximum of 1,000 hours per calendar year. It does not include any benefits.

GENERAL SUMMARY:
With minimal supervision, performs secretarial and clerical duties to ensure the timely flow of all necessary paperwork to support the operations and programs of the department. Performs office duties, which require extensive knowledge of departmental practices and procedures and must possess the ability to think and act independently. Specific duties and responsibilities will vary based on division assigned to.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
1. Operate word processor to prepare various legal documents and correspondence.
2. Prepare and maintain departmental files and records.
3. Receive, sort and distribute mail.
4. Compile data; prepare a variety of records and reports.
5. Interact tactfully with public both in person and on telephone to provide information and assistance as needed.
6. Interact with court personnel such as judges, attorneys and probation officers concerning criminal cases being prosecuted.
7. Work effectively with other employees, police officers and the general public to meet needs and assure timely flow of information to meet schedules of courts.
8. Operate data entry terminal for some divisions.
9. Complete special assignments and projects as requested.
10. Maintain logs for various assigned tasks.
11. Maintain scheduling of court hearings affecting assistant prosecuting attorneys.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: An Associate degree in secretarial science or criminal justice; and
Experience: One year of paid, full-time secretarial/clerical experience.
OR
Education: High school graduation or GED certificate; and
Experience: Three years paid full-time secretarial/clerical experience.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Considerable knowledge of modern office practices, secretarial practices and use of mainframe computer system. Knowledge of Criminal Justice System, word processing and spreadsheet software. Must be able to work in a noisy environment with many distractions and interruptions.
SPECIAL EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:
Employees of the Berrien County Prosecutor's Office must submit to fingerprints and may be subjected to a criminal record check, character, reputation, mental health, and moral character screening and clearance before employment. Employees must possess a valid vehicle operator's license; pass a pre-employment physical and drug test. Appropriate speech and dress as well as a high level of personal professional conduct for work in a Prosecutor's Office setting is required in accordance with the standards established by the Chief Prosecutor.
