Job Purpose and Overview

This position is accountable for the continued development & execution of Dawn’s Safety & Environmental strategy aligned and serving as the company’s foremost subject matter expert for all things EHS related. The Director of EHS will champion a continuous improvement culture across the Dawn organization and will work closely with people and business leaders to develop and implement effective proactive action plans to ensure highest standards in workplace safety and environmental programs/policies. This position is accountable for ensuring that Dawn enhances safety and environmental programs and performance throughout the organization; both internally and externally, and consistently leverages best practices.

 

Work Environment: This is a remote role giving you the ability to work from home the days you are not traveling.

Travel Requirements: This role requires travel 50% of the time.

 

What will you do as a Director of EHS – North America at Dawn Foods? 

  • This role directly manages regional EHS team/functional SMEs and has influence over EHS resources that work onsite at our facilities.
  • This role is ultimately responsible for NA EHS performance while providing support to Global Dawn EHS functions and is expected to leverage influence and relationships to get work done through others without direct authority.
  • Provides strategic leadership of environmental, health and safety initiatives and programs, driving performance improvement and strengthening the safety culture. Provide guidance in prioritizing projects and workloads.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and the management of safety, environmental, and security programs, policies, permits, and training to ensure compliance with company policies and government mandated programs.
  • Provides technical support and professional expertise to the overall Dawn organization, inclusive of leadership, engineering, plant operations, and distribution operations.
    • Consult with Engineering, leadership, and team members to identify and resolve potential EHS issues through engineering design changes or other means necessary.
    • Support capital projects as the EHS expert.
  • Ensure that safety records and documentation are maintained in accordance with company policies and legal requirements.
  • Responsible for timely submission of environmental reports/permits to US regulatory agencies.
  • Manage and oversee Dawn’s overall DOT compliance with shipment of hazardous materials.
  • Lead compliance to applicable NFPA and insurance provider property recommendations (i.e., combustible dust, storage of flammable liquids and property loss prevention inspections)
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of existing and proposed environmental health and safety Federal and State regulations.
  • Supports EHS investigations and incident reporting including root cause analysis problem solving, incident prevention, etc.
    • Developing sustainable action plans to reduce incident rates & mitigate risk areas.
  • Responsible for the follow-up of the workers' compensation claims for the facilities in partnership with the Worker’s Comp corporate team.
  • Perform plant, distribution center, and driver ride along inspections, identify risks and non-compliance areas, and develop action plans to correct deficiencies.
  • Work with external and internal resources as needed for facilities and program design, professional consulting services, insurance and workmen’s compensation issues, and regulatory compliance.
  • Liaison to the Global EHS leaders to roll up Global EHS performance to the Dawn Leadership Team, and to enable standardized metrics, programs, procedures, and training where applicable.
  • Lead and develop a robust Crisis Management program for the Dawn organization. o Serve as lead to build on the emergency response plans, training, and escalation policy to include catastrophic event planning, evacuations, hazardous material handling/spills, first responders, etc.
  • Manages/directs Dawn and its facilities in achieving Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) targets & objectives.
    • Identify, develop, and track appropriate EHS training calendar/curriculum for the organization by job function.
    • Responsible for the reduction/elimination of hazards and incident reduction within the Dawn facilities.
    • Conducts trends analysis and reporting of results against key EHS metrics to drive reduction in injury & illness rates.
    • Report on metrics and maintain safety systems to drive compliance, including developing detailed performance and tracking mechanisms for leading and lagging safety performance.
  • Implement effective change management practices in all cases where change adoption is a critical element of improving safety & environmental performance, goals, or behaviors.
  • Collaborate with leadership & people team to ensure that safety is integrated into all aspects of the company culture and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Understand and promote the philosophies and policies of Dawn Food Products, Inc. supporting the Circle of Excellence.

 

What Does It Take to be a Director of EHS – North America at Dawn Foods?  

Below are the minimum qualifications to be a fit for this job.   

  • Bachelors’ degree in a relevant field such as Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Occupational Health, and Safety
  • M.S, Environmental or Safety Engineering or equivalent preferred
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience leading EHS efforts within a manufacturing and distribution environment
  • Certified environmental, safety or Industrial Hygiene professional preferred
  • Direct involvement with EHS strategy and program development and implementation
  • Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong knowledge of local, state and federal EH&S regulations and guidance
  • Ability to work and engage with all levels of stakeholders.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 suite
  • Ability to travel up to 50%

Compensation:

$115,840 – $196,930 + Bonus Potential
