The Capacity and Performance Management (CAPM) team has overall responsibility for the Capacity Management processes within DIT Data Centers.
- CAPM provides a point of focus and management for all capacity and performance related issues.
- Capacity Management purpose is to ensure that capacity is in place and is performing sufficiently to meet current and future needs of DIT infrastructure and customer processing.
Capacity Management is comprised of two related disciplines:
- Performance Management and Capacity Planning.
- Performance Management relates the processing environment with near-term focus where Capacity Planning has a long-term focus.
- These disciplines are based on working knowledge of hosting platforms, databases, network, and storage components and customer processing behavior.
The scope of the CAPM team is broad and requires that members of the team have a broad depth of technical knowledge, analytical and problems solving skills, and be solutions oriented.
- Team members must have the ability to be self-directed, customer-focused, and to communicate effectively to stake holders, technologists, and internal/external customers.
CAPM relies on data derived from real-time monitoring and mining historical measurement data to transform the captured metrics into meaningful information which is used for analysis, forecasting and modeling, reporting, and recommendations for improved processing behavior, tuning and/or capacity changes.
Duties of CAPM members include:
- Tracking, analyzing, and reporting of service consumption of resources by the infrastructure and customer applications in terms of current performance and forecasted future performance.
- Providing guidance to customers and IT support sections to resolve and improve performance issues.
- Providing capacity planning recommendations based on forecasting or modeling of anticipated resources consumption.
- Providing support for rate analysis by modeling and forecasting revenue consumption of billed and non-billed resources.
- Technical support and customer service during problem solving to assist internal and external customers.
- Assisting in the evaluation and planning of proposed computing resources and services.
- Responsible for oversight of the availability and capacity of key service components to gauge optimal or abnormal performance or capacity demands.
- Making recommendations on hardware and software technologies to promote cost effective service delivery.
