Position Summary

The Inventory Control Plant Dock Supervisor is responsible for direct supervision of the IC dock area staff and their daily tasks. Primary functions include: overseeing team members and tasks involved in ensuring quality and care of all plants, trees, shrubs, and perennials located at the Inventory control (IC) Dock; accurate receiving and shipping of plant material; performing quality control to guarantee plants leaving the Dock meet our standards; keeping accurate inventory counts; training and development of staff in knowledge needed to contribute to the improvement and growth of the IC Dock; maintain an organized and safe working environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for plant care of all trees, shrubs, and perennials at the IC Dock, including watering, fertilizing, pruning, weed control, plant storage and identifying/controlling for diseases and insects.
  • Assist customers with information about our plant products and orders.
  • Guide IC Dock operations in day to day functions such as unloading shipments, tagging material, pulling plants for orders, taking inventory, and assisting with reclassifying plants.
  • Develop, present and implement new techniques for the care and movement of nursery stock.
  • Keep the general maintenance and IC Dock area clean and organized for employees and customers.
  • Maintain good records on spray records, equipment, and plant inventory.
  • Communicate effectively with and deliver exceptional customer service to our internal and external customers.
  • Operation of the irrigation system for watering and frost protection.
  • Stay current on new insects, diseases, plants and equipment used at the IC Dock.
  • Assist in feedback on plants, suppliers and process that could improve quality and/or efficiency
  • May assist IC Operations Manager with performing miscellaneous work during off season such as tagging, pruning, snow removal and planning for next season.
  • Coordination with dispatch to ensure timely delivery of plant material.
  • Keep an open communication with nursery manager on operations and process.
  • Act as snow route manager or other position involved in snow removal during the winter months.
  • Follows company safety policies and procedures at all times.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provides mentoring, coaching, constructive feedback and training of anyone working in the IC Dock.
  • Fosters a positive team-oriented work environment, resolving issues as they arise.
  • Oversees productivity staff including time and materials in and around the IC Dock.
  • Helps with hiring, promotions, training, and development of staff working at the IC Dock.
  • Documents the process and analyzes current state, making recommend any improvements or changes for review.
  • Approve time and ensure accuracy of hours for payroll.

Working Conditions

  • Work is primarily performed outdoors (75%) during all seasons; balance of work is performed indoors in typical office environment (25%).
  • Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, including inclement weather (rain, snow, heat or cold).
  • Work is often performed on uneven ground conditions (mud, snow, rocks, etc)
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Hearing protection is required for duties such as equipment operation that expose the individual to elevated noise levels.
  • Duties of this position expose the individual to chemicals and fertilizers

Education, Certification and License:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or related field preferred
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record is required.
  • Pesticide license Category 3.0 Turf and Landscape or the ability to obtain upon employment is required.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of Horticulture or Landscape experience is required;
  • At least 3 years of crew leader or supervisor experience required;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with employees and effectively resolve employee relations issues.

Specific Requirements:

  • Plant identification knowledge of trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials is required.
  • Operation of Loader, Bobcat, Tractor and other equipment used in plant holding yard.
  • Ability to prioritize and strategically manage multiple projects, staff and a varying workload.
  • Current knowledge and application of safety regulations and requirements involved with landscape maintenance tasks.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including problem solving and employee relations management.
  • Ability to analyze project details and necessities.
  • Advanced computer skills, including MS Outlook (email), Word, and Excel.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English is helpful.
  • Understanding of safety components of using tools and equipment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Stands and walks for long periods of time throughout the day.
  • Squats or kneels and lifts objects from ground occasionally.
  • Full extension of arms above head and in front of body.
  • Frequently lifts weight of up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally carries and pushes/pulls weights of up to 50 pounds.
  • Possesses good balance to work on uneven ground conditions.
  • Ability to communicate in English; bilingual with ability to communicate in Spanish is helpful.

Job Specifications

  • This is a Full-Time Seasonal position.
  • Typical work hours are Monday through Friday from 6:30am to 5:00pm during our peak season (Approximately April to November). Saturday hours as needed.
  • Hours of work (approximately 40 hours/week) vary in winter months (Approximately December through March) based on snow removal and winter warehouse duties.
  • Overtime may be required as workload dictates.
