SUMMARY:
District 113 Social Work Interns are members of a highly professional and invested team of student service personnel. Social Work Interns provide individual and small group counseling to support academic, emotional, and social success; as well as work with families and students, both in consultation and counseling capacities. Social Work Interns are an integral part of a problem-solving team. A District 113 Social Work Intern must demonstrate a keen awareness of and sensitivity to the issues facing young people and their families
and understand implications for education of students with academic, social and/or emotional challenges. To be successful in this role, Social Work Interns must be able to function as members of a team and work collaboratively with department colleagues, deans, faculty, and other support staff, as they develop working alliances with students and families.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate social work program pursuing a Professional Educator License with a School Social Work Endorsement.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
The District 113 Social Work Intern's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
District and Building-Wide
  • Participating in the building-wide intervention and teaming process;
  • Linking child-serving and community agencies to the school and families to support the student's academic, emotional, behavioral, and social success;
  • Implementing classroom-based programs and presentations;
  • Supporting district initiatives

Classroom Consultation
  • Assisting administrators and staff to understand the familial, cultural and community components of students' responses to instruction, learning and academic success.
  • Assessing student learning needs in collaboration with teachers to develop effective plans that support academic growth.

Students and Families
  • Providing individual and small group counseling support, crisis intervention, and consultation to students and families.
  • Conducting safety assessments and creating comprehensive therapeutic plans
  • Facilitating focused support groups
  • Conducting Social Developmental Histories as an integral part of determining student eligibility for special education services
  • Developing, evaluating and modifying evidence-based intervention plans that are guided by the student's educational needs, cultural background, family system, ecological factors, student strengths, and social-emotional needs
  • Participating in a variety of meetings: Individual Education Program meetings, 504 review meetings, attendance meetings, domain meetings, parent/student conferences, etc.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
  • Possess effective oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish
  • Possess mathematical and analytical skills appropriate for the position.

The noise level in the work environment ranges from quiet/moderate to loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with the public and other staff. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students.
