Supervises the counseling/advising activities for the International Students & Scholars Office (ISSSO). Acts as a Designated School Official/Alternate Responsible Officer on behalf of the university. Counsels International Students and scholars on the complex requirements of immigration law and cross-cultural adjustment.
- Serves as a Designated School Official/Alternate Responsible Officer for ISSSO. Collaborates with the SEVIS Coordinators to ensure SEVIS compliance for new and returning International Students and scholars.
- Acts as a liaison with university departments and government agencies to resolve complex immigration-related issues.
- Trains new international counselors on university processes and procedures. May supervise the work of student assistants and front office personnel.
- Authorizes International Students and scholars to receive visas, extensions of stay, employment and practical training, and to transfer to/from UH.
- Counsels and advises International Students and foreign faculty/research scholars on adjusting to the U.S. culture, academic requirements, finances, insurance, housing, safety, legal rights, and personal problems.
- Develops, compiles, and produces communications and promotional literature for distribution including office newsletters and brochures and complex statistical reports for internal and external publications.
- Reviews student grant applications and determines and recommends amount of financial assistance to be given to each applicant.
- Organizes orientation programs and pre-enrollment services. Conducts workshops for International Students, foreign faculty/research scholars regarding immigration, employment and tax matters.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
