The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization. 

The nutrition and food systems internship offers the opportunity to gain professional experience with a national non-profit organization where nutrition is a top priority. The American Heart Association improves access to healthy food by strengthening systems and empowering consumers to make healthy choices. The intern would have a passion for identifying gaps and solutions supporting the American Heart Association’s nutrition security and food systems business plan and strategies.

Internship Overview:

  • Time Commitment: 25 hours per week
  • Internship Duration: 5/20/2024 – 8/9/2024
  • Remote Position
  • Salary: $23.00 per hour

Internship Outcomes:

Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

  • Gain important and practical job skills to be successful in a non-profit environment.
  • Opportunity to explore a career path with a reputable voluntary health/service organization.
  • Gain experience in the professional world while learning about board management.
  • Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others.

Tasks could include things like the following:

  • Research, analysis, and reporting
    • Conduct research using online sources (e.g., food and nutrition issues, stakeholders, trends, etc.) to support initiatives such as food labeling, equitable clinic-community ecosystems, and more. Individuals with nutrition expertise will include scientific literature in research where relevant.
    • Analyze findings to identify trends, opportunities, and risks with respect to current and potential programs.
  • Present research findings internally to inform programs and projects, honing your executive presence and communication skills.
  • Writing and promotional support
    • Write an article for a health professional audience.
    • Develop promotional resources (e.g., slide decks, one-pagers, newsletters, etc.) to support fundraising and/or implementation of food systems programs.
    • Coordinate internal review and revision of promotional resources.
  • Administrative support
    • Develop materials for meetings (e.g., attendance list, agenda, speaker bios, etc.).
    • Take notes and identify action items in team meetings.



  • Juniors, Seniors or Graduate students with coursework in human nutrition and foods, food science, food systems, and/or culinary arts.
  • Knowledge and experience in communications standards, AP style, writing, and editing.
  • Ability to deal professionally in a corporate or non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion.
  • Effective oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
  • Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish preferred.
  • Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection
  • Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm CST.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future.  For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
