The American Heart Association's Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.
In this role, the intern has opportunities to learn hands-on how the Marketing Communications lead promotes the Association's campaigns, research, programs, and cause initiatives to achieve heart health for all. The internship will provide an opportunity to collaborate with teams across the Marketing and Communications, Development, and Community Impact departments, and throughout the Association. The intern will provide support to and collaborate with the Marketing Communications lead through various marketing communications strategies and tactics, such as media pitching, handling social media content creation and execution, supporting the organization's communication efforts with all audiences, and performing administrative and core marketing duties.

Internship Overview
  • Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week
  • Internship Duration: 1/16/2024-5/3/2024
  • Hybrid position in Hartford, Connecticut/Wallingford, MA area
  • Salary $23/hour

Internship Outcomes
Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

  • Gain experience in the professional world while learning about developing content based on a brand's positioning, character, and purpose.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the development of news releases and press materials.
  • Assist in drafting a wide variety of Marketing Communications materials to promote campaigns, events, and programs (e.g., resource links, internal tools, photos, or other multimedia, etc.)
  • Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and work with all levels of media contacts, community leaders, and American Heart Association volunteers and staff.
  • Responsible for collaborating and assisting the marketing communications lead in planning and executing the marketing and communications efforts to promote via earned media or paid media strategies, programs, campaigns, and initiatives.
  • Provide ideas to support strategic marketing, public relations, and corporate communications.
  • Research potential media collaborators and opportunities to advance the Association's priorities.
  • Supporting the implementation and execution of marketing and communications plans.
  • Assist in managing and creating content for the Association's Connecticut social media accounts which include Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Qualifications
  • Candidates who are juniors, seniors, or graduate students pursuing a degree in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, or localization/translation with an interest in non-profit and healthcare communications.
  • Must submit a writing example (examples: Newsletters, Press Releases, Blog posts).
  • Demonstrated excellence in written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.
  • Mastery of the major social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter)
  • Ability to maintain professionalism in a corporate or non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
  • Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Basic knowledge of Canva.
  • Minimum availability of 20-25 hrs./wk.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
  • Required Equipment: Reliable Wi-Fi Connection
