Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties

Job Summary:
Instructs students enrolled English as a Second Language (ESL) and Integrated Education Training (IET) courses providing learning experiences both in person and online, necessary for each student to meet the objectives of the course, as well as being responsible for improving learning experiences for students. Provides high quality instruction so that each student may meet learning outcomes. Works with the dean and colleagues to improve student learning experiences. Performs other instructional responsibilities as determined by the dean.
Essential Duties:

  • Helps advance the role and goals of a comprehensive community college.
  • Teaches non-credit Adult Basic Skill courses, which will include team-taught and support courses to support career-technical education certificate programs
  • Creates a learning environment for students inclusive of diverse cultural, social, economic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff from other departments and divisions to promote communication, coordinate programs, and support student success.
  • Prepares clear learning outcomes for each course, and informs students of learning outcomes in a course syllabus.
  • Participates in college service and activities outside direct instruction, such as student orientation, grant accountability requirements, curriculum development, strategic planning, educational assessment, and completion ceremonies.
  • Supports student recruitment, placement, retention, and advising.
  • Posts and keeps office hours to be available to students for assistance outside the classroom.
  • Teaches at least one evening section per year as needed.
  • Facilitates communication and serve as a mentor to a large part-time faculty.
  • Facilitates faculty meetings, training, and professional development as needed.
  • Keeps professionally current by participating in professional development and other activities; maintains current credentials or licensures as required by program or accreditation.
  • Maintains active liaison with high schools, universities, business and industry, or external agencies, and assists the dean with program advisory committees as appropriate.
  • Completes instructional duties, reports, and other administrative responsibilities assigned by the dean in a timely manner and in accordance with grant standards.
  • Attends division, department, and committee meetings and in-service programs.
  • Incorporates, as pedagogically appropriate, current technology in classroom, online environment, laboratory and office environments.
  • Maintains and emphasizes safe working conditions and practices.
  • Complies with all Board policies and administrative regulations.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Master’s degree (or higher) in TESOL/TEFL OR Master’s degree (or higher) with 24 graduate credit hours in adult education OR Master’s degree (or higher) in any discipline and three years of experience teaching ESOL and contextualized vocational classes.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching practices and service activities
Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching experience with culturally and linguistically diverse students from a variety of ages, backgrounds, and learning differences
  • Experience working with adult multilingual (English) language learners
  • Experience teaching Integrated Education and Training (IET), VESL and/or I-BEST courses
  • Experience developing contextualized standards-based curriculum
  • Experience teaching non-credit Adult Basic Skill courses, including team-taught, co-taught, and support courses to support career-technical education certificate programs.
  • Experience with using digital tools and applications to deliver instruction and supporting students in their development of digital skills.

  • Ability to manage and engage students from diverse backgrounds and skill levels;
  • Knowledge of best practices, current methodologies, and innovative teaching and learning strategies such as, high engagement facilitation strategies, adult learning, and language acquisition andragogy
  • Ability to team-teach, co-teach, and work alongside faculty from various career technical education programs
  • Knowledge of English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS)
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize teaching methods, approaches, and techniques for integrating academic content and language learning.

Working Conditions and Important Information

Working Conditions:
Works assigned schedule and exhibits regular and predictable attendance. As necessary to meet workload demands, works outside of typical schedule including evening/weekend hours. Work may require travel to off-campus locations. Work assignments may require working in multiple locations and modalities.

Salary:
Salary placement will be based on applicable Education and/or years of relevant full-time equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement. Please include all relevant Education and full and part-time experience in your application that you want the College to review towards potential placement. Hired employees will not have an opportunity to update past Education and/or experience or appeal initial placement after the time of hire.
