The Institute of Popular Education of Southern California (IDEPSCA) is a nonprofit community based organization whose purpose is to promote self-determination in the low-wage working community in Southern California politically, culturally, and economically using popular education based organizing methods. We promote the development of collective solutions to community problems.
The Day Laborer Program is a program funded in part by the City of Los Angeles and run by IDEPSCA. Day Laborer hiring centers provide a community-supported alternative for Day Laborers who previously looked for work on street corners to find work in a more humane, safe and organized environment.
Position Summary: The Day Laborer Outreach Coordinator plans and carries out the outreach responsibilities at IDEPSCA’s Downtown Community Job Centers. The Outreach Coordinator builds support for the Center by conducting outreach to Day Laborers, current and potential employers, local merchants, community groups, among others. The Outreach Coordinator works as a member of a team with the Site Coordinator and the Program Manager.
I. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Acquire employment opportunities for Day Laborers and household workers
- Assist in ensuring that outreach requirements of contracts are met.
- Create outreach plan with Site Coordinator to obtain more jobs, employers, allies and new participants and implement it.
- Reach out to Day Laborers gathered at unaffiliated corners and invite them to use the Day Labor Centers by promoting centers’ services and build solidarity among and with them.
- Increase the number of registered members.
- Answer phone calls from potential employers, employers, workers etc.
- Maintain a database of employers, local businesses, and agencies for referral
- Assist Site Coordinator and Program Manager in nurturing leadership development at the job center by promoting and encouraging civic participation and democratic decision-making practices with the Day Laborers.
- Follow up with and implement agreements regarding outreach reached by the Day Laborers and staff in general assembly meetings
- Conduct outreach activities such as flyer distribution, phone banking, online job search, business visits and posting to social media sites including Google, Yelp, Instagram and Facebook.
- Document incidents, events, problems, and conflicts on site when the Site Coordinator is not present
- Submit weekly reports/narratives about events/outreach activities to Site Coordinator
- Support Site Coordinator in organizing and implementing cultural events and celebrations such as the site anniversary.
- Cover worker centers when site managers are on vacation or attending meetings/events and/or when is necessary. (This include all centers)
- Support Site Coordinator in assisting workers with wage claims, filling out wage claims and/or referring them to the Worker Justice Coordinator
- Tabling at events to promote the center and do networking to find potential resources, allies and new members.
- Distribute Material to workers on site and nearby including but not limited to PPE, Water
- Ensure that the center is posting updated information about resources/programs for workers and community members.
- Ensure that all outreach activities performed are properly documented.
- Do data entry of daily activities
- Perform other duties as assigned
II. JOB REQUIREMENTS: (Skills and Qualifications)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of and commitment to immigrant rights and social justice
- Bilingual (English and Spanish).
- Ability to work flexible hours and weekends when necessary (work early, afternoon and/or evening)
- Willingness to work at locations with limited resources and spend a good amount of hours outdoors, in heat, cold and rain.
- Knowledge of popular education methodology preferred
- Strong teamwork and organizational skills
- Knowledge of computer operations (Windows, Word, Excel, Internet, Google Drive, Social Media -Facebook, Instagram, Yelp- and equipment operation such as copiers, fax machines, and telephones required.
- Patience and courtesy are a must
- Creativity and Problem Solving
- Conflict Resolution Experience/ or willing to learn
- Proactive and self-motivated
- Facilitation Experience/ or willing to learn
- Ability to work well with diverse groups and populations, especially Day Laborers and the homeless community.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work well under pressure.
- valid driver’s license
- Insured, registered vehicle preferred (mileage reimbursement is offered).
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
