Job Description
The Bowery Mission (TBM) exists to promote the flourishing of New Yorkers overcoming homelessness and marginalization. The Human Resources Team works to support over 150 talented employees in NY and PA to ensure they receive the full array of Human Resources services. The Human Resources Generalist is responsible for coordinating the organization's day-to-day Human Resources, benefits, and payroll functions. The Generalist supports the administration of all benefits and retirement programs, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, 403(b) plans, and mental health resources. With in-depth knowledge of Human Resources operations, employee benefits, and the federal, state, and local laws that govern them, the Generalist also administers various types of employee leaves and time off and serves as a system administrator for the organization’s HRIS system. This role is employee-facing and serves as the point of contact for HR questions and issues raised by employees and managers regarding Human Resources, benefits, and payroll.
This position is hybrid, full time employees work full-time hours of 40 hrs. per week with the Human Resource Generalist spending 2-3 days per week onsite at our Tribeca, NY office. May travel to other Campus Locations as needed.
Weekly schedule is Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 5:30 pm.
Reports to: Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO)
Key Responsibilities:
- HRIS System Administration, Onboarding, & Offboarding: Ensure new hires receive initial paperwork, process and review background checks, and lead HR orientations. Initiate new hire onboarding and collaborate with hiring managers to ensure successful onboarding. Work closely with hiring managers and internal stakeholders to facilitate a smooth onboarding process. Complete all administrative tasks for departing employees, launch offboarding packets, and ensure proper offboarding in collaboration with team supervisors. Serve as system administrator for the organization’s HRIS system, maintaining employee records and documents. Coordinate with HRIS vendor to optimize system utilization and implement process updates, communicating changes as necessary. Manage the I-9 process.
- Benefits Administration :Assist with the open enrollment process by creating and distributing materials and providing training. Verify the accuracy of all benefits enrollments in the benefits admin system to supply vendors with precise eligibility information. Update the HRIS system with appropriate benefit changes. Conduct quality checks of benefits-related data. Aid employees with benefits claim issues and plan changes. Address benefits inquiries from managers and employees regarding plan provisions, benefits enrollments, status changes, and other general inquiries. Respond to 403(b) inquiries regarding enrollments, plan changes, and contribution amounts. Reconciliation of benefits elections and invoices. Assist with the annual 5500 audit process concerning benefits.
- Employee Time Off and Leave Administration: Process and administer all leave-of-absence requests and disability paperwork, including medical, personal, disability, and FMLA. Interpret FMLA, PFL, and ADA implications concerning leaves of absence and disabilities. Manage workers' compensation and unemployment claims. Implement and enforce the organization’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols.
- Payroll Administration: Oversee the Human Resources department’s preparation and processing of payroll. Collaborate with finance/payroll to ensure the accuracy of all benefits and leave. Maintain bi-weekly control documentation for payroll changes. Assist with the accurate and timely processing of bi-weekly payroll through the TBM payroll process. Reconcile and audit payroll processes as required.
- Support HR Team Initiatives: Assist in supporting HR Team initiatives such as monthly Supervisor Meetings, quarterly Town Halls, and monthly All-Staff Calls by arranging rooms and technology setup as assigned. Handle tasks and initiatives as directed by the CHRO or Leadership Team. Manage the HR email inbox.
- HR Policy and Handbook Updates: Maintain the organization’s employee handbook, making updates as requested by leadership. Offer recommendations for policy and process enhancements based on HR knowledge and experience. Collaborate with the General Counsel for routine policy reviews and updates.
Requirements:
- Embraces the organization's Statement of Faith
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years of relevant HR experience.
- Work experience should include handling confidential information in an appropriate manner.
- A solid working knowledge of employee benefits and laws, federal, state, and local employment law, HR operations, and HRIS systems.
- Excellent computer skills, including thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office, databases, and advanced spreadsheet skills and proficiency in benefits, and payroll systems.
- Employees must be resourceful, organized, detail-oriented, and task-oriented, with the ability to establish priorities and follow up on multiple issues in a time-sensitive manner.
- Skilled at working under pressure and with minimal supervision, demonstrating sound independent judgment.
- Ability to exercise a high degree of professionalism, diplomacy, discretion, firmness, and collaboration in dealing with individuals at all levels.
- Strong analytical and tenacious problem-solving skills are necessary.
Preferred:
- SHRM-CP or PHR Certification is preferred but not required.
Salary commensurate with relevant education & experience: $70,000 - $75,000 per year
