Job Summary

This position coordinates the health, safety and environment of the Kenaitze Indian Tribe. This person coordinates with other agencies, within the Tribe, and community to provide services and trains employees regarding these components. This individual is responsible for accurate, timely reporting as required by the organizational policies and procedures. This position works closely with all Tribal divisions and departments and functions to ensure that all health and safety requirements are met at all times. Works with many outside agencies in order to meet local, state, and federal requirements and regulations.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for providing workplace supervision and coordination with the information and support required to run all operations at optimal safety level, train employees and analyze job hazards on a continuing basis
  • Educate Tribal leadership and workforce in areas that affect the health and safety culture
  • Conduct accident and injury investigations and provide expertise on hazard identification and risk mitigation processes
  • Work to ensure consistency of approach and application of health and safety programs across the Tribe
  • Develop safety plans and procedures such as Energy Isolation, Lock out Tag out, working at heights, etc
  • Ensure health and safety systems, policies, procedures and programs used to manage jobs are understood and are utilized by personnel, contractors and volunteers
  • Develop and deliver the health, safety and environmental training programs and conduct departmental safety meetings
  • Conduct and participate in review, inspections and audits of contractors, their equipment and programs to ensure compliance with Regulatory requirements, as requested
  • Work in conjunction with and provide applicable support outside agencies, Emergency Responders and other Tribal organizations
  • Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety, Engineering or related discipline or Occupational Health and Safety Technologist or Construction Safety and Health Technologist, or a combination of education and experience may be substituted for a degree

Experience

  • A minimum of three years of experience working in a HSE site safety role
  • A strong knowledge base of OSHA regulations and demonstrated application
  • Demonstrate competency in core safety programs, including: Energy Isolation; Ground Disturbance; Confined Space Entry; Working at heights; Lifting Operations; Driving Safety; Management of Change
  • Working knowledge of Incident Command System
  • Construction project experience

Preferred

  • Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities

License/Certification

  • Must have a valid Alaska State driver's license and must remain insurable under the Tribe's policy, or obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Professional Safety Certifications preferred
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification, or obtain within 90 days

Special Skills

  • Excellent oral/written communication skills and strong organizational, planning and reporting skills
  • Knowledge of community based emergency response resources
  • Demonstrate ability for continuous improvement
  • Support delivery of competitive benchmarks
  • Maintain education necessary to remain compliant in the industry
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, or obtain training within 90 days of hire
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Conducts business in a service-oriented manner that is attentive, pleasant, respectful and kind when dealing with un'ina, visitors, co-workers and others

This position is a Covered Position subject to all requirements of the Alaska Barrier Crimes Act (ABCA) and to the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, (ICPA). ABCA and ICPA requirements apply and must be complied with at all times in order to remain in the position.
