Job Description Summary
The Higher Education Opportunity ( HEOP ) Student Success Counselor position is responsible for providing counseling and advising for continuing HEOP students and support the recruitment, admission, and successful enrollment of new students into the program. This person meets regularly with a caseload of HEOP scholars and serves as liaison with faculty and staff throughout the institution to ensure equitable access to the educational opportunities and supports available to all students.
Successful student outcomes at the institution rely on a matrixed, integrated approach to providing wrap-around support services. Consequently, this position is expected to work synergistically with colleagues across the institution in facilitating access to academic, experiential, and wellness resources toward ensuring successful student thriving while matriculating toward degree completion. The proactive and consistent engagement with campus colleagues in exploring, developing, implementing, and assessing the outcomes of data-informed, best-practices is expected.
The HEOP Student Success Counselor also provides support in the planning and implementation of the Summer Start bridge program as well as additional student support across SAAP programs.
Essential Functions
Student Success Support
- Meet regularly with a case load of HEOP students to monitor their success as well as identify and provide appropriate outreach referrals for students in crisis or whose behaviors or academic performance jeopardize their success
Seasonal SAAP Recruitment Support
Provide seasonal support to Strategic Enrollment Management ( SEM ) & Student Access & Achievement Programs ( SAAP ) student recruitment efforts
May include active participation in on-campus recruitment and yield events
Summer Start Bridge Program Support
- Support planning and engagement efforts during Summer Start bridge program for new HEOP and other SAAP program cohorts
Supplemental Functions
Possibility of serving as co-instructor of an Academic and College Success ( ACS ) course for first-time-in-college ( FTIC ) students
Required Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills
Required Education and Experience
Masters degree
3-5 years of direct professional experience support Student Success in a college or university setting
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated expertise and knowledge of best practices, trends, and student development theory in supporting college Student Success in general, diverse students and families, specifically
Experience with programmatic development, evaluation, and data assessment in a college or university setting
Ability to be flexible and work comfortably with a high degree of independence
Demonstrated ability to work with a culturally and ethnically diverse population
Experience working with student databases and/or student management software/technology (e.g. ColleagueTM; StarfishTM; MoodleTM; etc.)
Experience working with student populations who are neurodivergent.
Spanish-speaking bilingualism is considered a desirable plus
Demonstrated experience helping diverse students and their families navigate financial aid considerations and other aspects of financial literacy is a desirable plus
Preferred Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills
Masters degree in a higher education; college student affairs; or college student advising
2-5 years of direct experience working with or in support of diverse students in an counseling and/or advising setting

Physical Requirements
Prolonged periods of sitting, extensive computer use, and occasional lifting or moving of light objects
Equipment to be used
Proficiency with typical office equipment is necessary for this role, including computers, printers, scanners, telephones, and photocopiers.
