Position Title: Health & Safety Specialist
Department: Operations Admin
Reports to: Director of Contracts & Compliance
Pay Class: Full-time Regular
FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt
Position Summary
The Health & Safety Specialist will ensure that health and safety protocols, including all COVID-19-specific policies and procedures are implemented and followed throughout the organization and are aligned with current local, state and federal guidance in conjunction with the Director of Contracts & Compliance and the Safety Team. This position is responsible for monitoring incident and other reports from all areas of the organization, ensuring swift and appropriate communication regarding health issues, fleet maintenance, chemical management and training and generally acting as a primary resource for health and safety questions and responses throughout the organization.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Update and administer safety training and develop and maintain a record, in collaboration with the HR team, to ensure compliance with annual training requirements for a variety of safety topics including camp staff safety, driving, chemical use, heat exposure, bloodborne pathogens, evacuations, and more
  • Create a comprehensive system to library and track chemicals used throughout the Center, and create a centralized electronic repository of Safety Data Sheets (SDSs)
  • Ensure Center vehicles are regularly maintained, serviced and kept in running order, along with taking primary responsibility for training drivers and maintaining a record of currently Authorized Drivers
  • Act as the primary point of contact, along with the Safety Team, for reporting of physical hazards and identification and mitigation of unsafe conditions at Center facilities, and regularly monitor and restock first aid kits
  • Partner with the Director of Facilities to ensure the facility is safe and well-maintained, and work with the city's Fire Marshall and ensure that the Center is compliant and has appropriate mitigations in place to prevent fire hazards
  • With the Director of Contracts & Compliance, build a strong and diverse Safety Council team to assess risk issues and make recommendations about improving conditions and mitigating areas of risk across the organization
  • During the summer, and at other times while camps are running:
  • Act as the primary resource for safety for camp staff by visiting each camp site 1+ time per week
  • Create and maintain a comprehensive log of reported incidents and concerns
  • Disseminate a daily email to camp staff summarizing recent reports and reminders, a weekly email to camp staff summarizing the week, and a weekly monitoring report to the Executive Leadership Team
  • Serve as an integral member of the Safety Team
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Best practices related to health and safety, including environmental health and fleet management
  • Department of Health and CDC guidance for camps and COVID-19

Skills:
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication
  • Excellent time management and organization
  • Work effectively and respectfully with people from different cultural backgrounds and at different levels of the organization
  • Excellent customer service skills; be approachable and use welcoming body language and demeanor
  • Create complex logs and reports using Word and Excel

Ability to:
  • Ensure confidentiality and privacy of sensitive health and safety information
  • Ensure guests of all ages and from diverse backgrounds are welcomed and served in a manner that makes their experience positive, memorable and consistent with Pacific Science Center's mission, vision, and values
  • Take initiative and act independently, as well as with a team
  • Quickly learn and apply policies and procedures
  • Maintain a calm demeanor in a stressful and rapidly changing environment

Qualifications
Required
  • Past experience in a health and safety or related field
  • Experience developing and disseminating data and information through various forms of communication
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record including no moving violations in the past three years
  • First Aid/AED/CPR certified or willingness to obtain this certification
  • Ability to work flexible shifts including evenings and weekends, especially during the summer

Compensation
Pay is based on several factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience.
Starting Base Salary Range: $23.00-$27.00
In addition to base salary, regular employees working 40 hrs/week can expect the following benefits:
