Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is seeking an EHS Specialist for Biosafety. This position, under the general supervision of the Biosafety Officer (BSO), will support activities designed to provide for a safe, compliant biological research environment through inspections, risk assessments, and training programs. The EHS specialist for biosafety is responsible for various elements of the biosafety program involved in Fred Hutch’s use of infectious agents and recombinant DNA. The main duties are development, training, coordination, administration, and implementation of Fred Hutch’s Biosafety Program. This position works directly with laboratories and serves as an expert source regarding biosafety best practices, hazard mitigation, containment, and ensuring compliance with all relevant state and federal regulations.
Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate and inspect facilities with organisms and materials requiring Biosafety and Animal Biosafety Level One (BSL-1/ABSL-1), Biosafety and Animal Biosafety Level Two (BSL-2/ABSL-2) and Biosafety Level 2 with 3 practices (BSL-2/3) containment in accordance with the CDC/NIH manual, Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), and local, state, federal and funding agency requirements. Responsible for inspection follow-ups and recommendations to BSO or Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) for corrective action if needed.
  • Consult with Center employees regarding recognized and potential occupational exposures and investigate occupational accidents and illness as necessary.
  • Provides training on biosafety and biosafety work practices. Provide biosafety/biosecurity-related guidance to researchers, Principal Investigators and administrators regarding codes, policies, and procedures; refer more complex issues to the BSO.
  • Assist with the review of Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) disclosures to ensure biosafety/biosecurity practices and procedures are incorporated and implemented in research activities.
  • Collaborate with and support as needed chemical, biosafety and radiation safety programs.
  • Support and/or serve as a member of the hazardous materials response team, maintaining written plans, procedures, and applicable training.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications:
Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, physical sciences, occupational safety, Environmental Health or related scientific field.
  • One year experience in a research or clinical laboratory
  • Technical competency and laboratory experience with research involving recombinant DNA/RNA or biohazards
  • Experience performing or assisting with laboratory safety inspections
  • Experience teaching, presenting or training

Preferred:
  • Must take initiative, be organized and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal and excellent verbal and written communication skills, with attention to detail
  • Must possess a collaborative customer service approach working with labs
  • Ability to work independently and deliver projects on time
  • Professional certification or eligibility for certification (Certified Biosafety Professional, Registered Biosafety Professional) desired
  • Possess a working knowledge of academic research laboratory processes, equipment and facilities.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $72,946 to $109,408, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
