Brunswick, Maine law firm is seeking a full-time Legal Assistant for its Florida remote location for the attorney in charge of the team. Position Summary:
The Legal Assistant is accountable for supporting the timely and accurate handling and processing of active claims and Florida litigation documentation and support. The position helps gather essential information for active claims, compiles thorough and accurate documentation, works with and accurately manages information within legal database, and communicates tactfully and effectively with colleagues, attorneys, and other stakeholders.
Key Outcomes:
- Supports the processing and disposition of active claims by:
- Maintaining an accurate file management for insurance claims
- Collecting and processing necessary documentation; supporting management of active claims
- Collecting and obtaining Police Reports and other claims documents
- Obtaining and documenting status updates, denial information, and explanations
- Communicates with courts, clients, experts, investigators, insurance adjusters, and opposing counsel to gather essential information for active insurance claims and North Carolina litigation.
- Draft accurate North Carolina Litigation Docket documentation, including:
- Demands to insurance, defendants, opposing counsel
- Notice of Claims to defendants, opposing counsel
- Supports the handling of active litigation by drafting and editing:
- Petitions
- Litigation documents, including motions, discovery, mediations, etc.
- Compiling documents for preparation of hearings, motions, and trials.
- Researching addresses, tracking service of process, and communicating with process servers
- Support post judgment recovery processes by:
- Requesting and recording Abstracts of Judgment and serving Writs of Execution
- Interfacing with state agencies to suspend driving licenses/registration and initiate other recovery actions.
Education/Experience:
Paralegal/Legal Assistant degree or certificate, and/or Associates Degree required, or educational equivalent
Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience at a law firm/legal environment; Florida litigation documentation experience required, or equivalent combination of training, experience and education
Skills/Knowledge/Competencies (Behaviors):
- Strong technical skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook; prior database experience preferred
- Aptitude and ability to learn legal industry database
- Highly organized, with ability to prioritize, organize, and disposition a large volume of incoming data
- Willing to support others and work collaboratively and collegially across the organization
- Ability to interface with multiple levels, including attorneys, CEO, as well as peers
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with tact and respect while handling challenging conversations with courts, defendants, opposing attorneys, and insurance adjusters
- Proven problem solving/critical thinking
- Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and succinct manner
- Readily adaptable to new/different/challenging assignments
- Exceptional integrity and work ethic
Requirements:
- Extended periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
