Job description

Under general supervision of the Fire Marshal, the Fire Prevention Technician processes fire permit applications, maintains division databases to track information on permits, plan reviews, fire inspections, pre-plans, and safety surveys. Schedules daily activity of fire inspectors in coordination with the Deputy Fire Marshal. Performs routine technical and customer service duties for the department.
The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.

  • Enters data and/or tracks information on permits, plan reviews, fire inspections, fire inspections, pre-plans, and safety surveys.
  • Assists applicants with forms and technical questions related to Fire Prevention permit process.
  • Tracks projects from initial application through issuance of Certificate of Occupancy.
  • Maintains and updates revisions to codes and ordinances, and provides notifications of revisions to builders, contractors, developers, engineers, and architects.
  • Reviews, accepts and processes permit applications and documents, assesses permitting fees, provides receipts for fees paid, provides change, reconciles, and closes out cash drawer at close of business.
  • Schedules all daily activity for inspectors and investigators conducting fire and life safety inspections.
  • Responds to intergovernmental requests for information, applies applicable statutory considerations and releases information accordingly.
  • Assists with the processing of Public Information Requests in accordance with the Texas Public Information Act.
  • Answers and directs telephone calls to appropriate personnel.
  • Opens and distributes U.S. and interdepartmental mail to department personnel.
  • Orders office supplies and distributes to department personnel.

Other Important Duties:
  • Maintains and updates department records and files.
  • Assists in preparing graphic designs, charts, and spreadsheets for reports.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
  • Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns.
  • Knowledge of fire codes and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of research methods to respond to fire code and ordinance inquiries.
  • Knowledge of computers and related equipment, hardware, and software.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communications.
  • Skill in creating illustrations, designs, charts and graphs for division reports, records, and presentations.
  • Skill in maintaining bookkeeping records and reconciling receipts.
  • Skill in training other employees in the utilization of computer software and databases.
  • Required to possess State of Texas Driver's License.

Education, Experience, and Certifications/Licenses:
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D., and two (2) years permit or Fire Prevention experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain International Code Council Permit Technician Certificate issued within twelve (12) months from entering the position.
  • May be required to obtain advanced training in secretarial, computer software, plan review, and/or fire and life safety programs.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check, and MVR check.
  • May be required to possess a valid State of Texas Driver's License.
  • Work is performed in an office environment.
  • Fingering - picking, pinching, typing, working with fingers rather than hand.
  • Hearing 1 - perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, receive information.
  • Mental Acuity - ability to make rational decisions through sound logic, deductive reasoning.
  • Repetitive Motion - substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.
  • Speaking - expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
  • Talking 1- expressing ideas by spoken word.
  • Visual Acuity 1 - prepare, analyze data, transcribing, computer terminal, extensive reading.

Work Environment:
  • Work performed is primarily sedentary work, exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
