JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for reviewing project documents for compliance with the County’s adopted codes with the primary focus on Life Safety Systems.  Responsible for managing assigned inspectors’ activities, for public outreach and teaching fire safety to county citizens.  Participates in planning of programs, policies, or objectives for work group and department. 

• Conducts meetings with subordinates or others as necessary for the proper dissemination of information, procedural updates, changes in County guidelines and other information from staff meetings; Participates in the training of staff.
• Continuously monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures of assigned personnel; Identifies opportunities for improvement; Recommends and implements approved changes.
• Works with architects, engineers, contractors and the general public in applying fire code regulations to projects relative to the permit process.
• Reviews life safety submittals and fire protection systems which encompass fire suppression, detection and alarm systems, standpipe and smoke control systems and may include systems for high-piled storage, spray booths, hood and duct, dust collection, conveyors, hazardous materials and engineered systems for compliance with fire and left safety codes, regulations and standards, including State, ICC and NCPA requirements.
• Interviews and recommends selection of job applicants, appraises employee performance and conducts informal counseling on work issues.
• Provides technical advice to architects, engineers, developers, building owners and contractors on the interpretation and enforcement of fire protections requirements, fire and life safety codes, regulations; Investigates and recommends alternative materials and methods upon request.
• Conducts, oversees and administers classes or courses to county citizens, schools, government agencies and nongovernment agencies and county employees in fire safety and fire equipment uses throughout the county.
• Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers and is subject to emergency call back.

• High school diploma or GED; Associates Degree or 60 college hours or equivalent.
• TCOLE Basic Peace Officer.
• 6 years overall experience in an organized emergency response department, including 2 years leadership/management experience within the fire service.
• Strong computer and organizational skills, ability to prioritize own work and ability to complete assigned tasks within tight deadline.
• Strong verbal and written skills; strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with the public, other employees and elected officials. 
• Requires TCFP Plans Examiner, TCFP Advanced Inspector, TCFP Instructor II, TCFP Basic Investigator, ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800.

SALARY RANGE: $36.93 - $46.18 hourly based on qualifications
