Job description

This position is a licensed Peace Officer that performs law enforcement duties related to fire department activities. Conducts fire inspections, complex fire system acceptance test plans, site plans, building plans, and code reviews for new project construction, public Fire Prevention education, and hazardous materials response planning. Conducts fire/arson investigations in the Town and assists with mutual aid investigations as needed.WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Inspects commercial, business, and public occupancies for Town of Flower Mound Fire Code compliance and applicable state and federal laws.
  • Conducts acceptance tests for all fire systems in high value and high hazard occupancies including but not limited to the hospital, hotels, and high-rise buildings.
  • Conducts plans reviews for fire alarm, fire sprinkler, smoke removal, and other life safety systems required in various occupancies.
  • Assists in maintaining hazardous materials data generated from local occupancies for 'Right to Know' compliance.
  • Responsible for maintaining Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) licenses.
  • Assists in training operational personnel in technical aspects of fire protection systems and design.
  • Attends various association and committee meetings related to the scope of Fire Prevention.
  • Attends continuing education classes to maintain certification levels as required by the department, the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP), and the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
  • Maintains records and reports, including but not limited to fire inspections, investigations, preplanning, and public education classes.
  • Assists in conducting comprehensive educational programs on fire safety and Fire Prevention in schools, civic clubs, public and industrial organizations, and for the public.
  • Conducts investigations into the cause and origin of fires and fire-related crimes.
  • Conducts background investigations for employees of the fire department.
  • Assists the fire operations division in the pre-incident planning program.
  • Informs supervisor of all work activities.
  • Adheres to the personnel, departmental, and safety policies and procedures.
  • Assists with or leads fire cause, origin, and arson investigations.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Certified Structural Firefighter OR
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic Peace Officer License.
  • One (1) or more years of progressive work experience in fire suppression or policing.

EDUCATION:
  • Successful completion of forty-five (45) college hours
  • An associate degree in Applied Science Fire Protection Technology or related field is preferred.

Desired Qualifications:
Basic Arson Investigator certification issued by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) is preferred and must be obtained within one (1) year of hire.
Basic Fire Inspector certification issued by the Texas Fire Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) is preferred and must be obtained within one (1) year of hire.
Plans Examiner certification issued by the Texas Commission of Fire Protection (TCFP) is preferred and must be obtained within one (1) year of hire.
Emergency Medical Technician certification issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services is preferred and must be obtained within one (1) year of hire.
Texas Class "B" Exempt Driver's License is preferred and must be obtained within one (1) year of hire, and the driving record must comply with Town policy.
If applying with the Texas Commission of Fire Protection (TCFP) Structural Firefighter , Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic Peace Officer must be obtained within one (1) year of hire.
If applying with , Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic Peace Officer, Texas Commission of Fire Protection (TCFP) Structural Firefighter must be obtained within one (1) year of hire.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
  • Must have an extensive working knowledge of Fire Prevention and inspections as well as Fire Prevention techniques, laws, codes, and regulations relating to Fire Prevention.
  • Must have general working knowledge of fire and emergency medical services as well as the behaviors and chemistry of fire and hazardous materials.
  • Must have excellent communicative skills, reading and comprehension skills, and public relations skills.
  • Must be able to work under stress and exhibit emotional stability.
  • Must be able to make quick sound decisions.
  • Must be able to work extended hours as needed.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
  • Must be able to see, read, hear, walk, and talk.
  • Must be able to work in adverse environmental and hazardous conditions to include mechanical, electrical, fume odor, dust/mist, chemical, toxic waste hazards, and solid waste substance; insects; and noxious plants.
  • Must be able to pass departmental physical assessment test.
  • Must submit to and pass pre-employment polygraph examination.
  • Must submit to and pass pre-employment drug screen.
  • Pass pre-employment psychological examination.
