Job Description:

The Fire Chief oversees the Fire Department. The incumbent establishes and administers fire department policy, and is responsible for the prevention and extinguishment of fires; the protection of life and property against hazard of fire; disaster preparedness and management; emergency response and emergency medical-related issues, and aircraft rescue and firefighting

Qualifications:

Mandatory

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Ten (10) years’ experience in a supervisory capacity overseeing fire department operations.
  • Fire Officer IV certification (DoD, PROBOARD, or IFSAC)
  • Fire Instructor II certification (DoD, PROBOARD, or IFSAC)
  • Fire Inspector II certification (DoD, PROBOARD, or IFSAC)
  • Hazmat Incident Commander (IC) certification (DoD, PROBOARD, or IFSAC)
  • Airport Firefighter certification (DoD, PROBOARD, or IFSAC)
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-100 certification.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-200 certification.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-300 certification.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-700 certification.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-800 certification.
  • Experienced in disaster preparedness planning and operations.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint at an intermediate level.
  • Valid state driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment physical and drug test.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a secret clearance.

Desired:

  • Bachelors degree in Fire science of other related field.
  • Experience working on Base Operations Support (BOS) contracts
  • Knowledge of US. Air Force fire protection policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of DoDI 6055.6, DoDI 6055.6-M, AFI 32-2001, and all applicable NFPA standards and OSHA regulations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the installation/command mission and organization.
  • Experience in managing a fire department occupational safety and health program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Directs and oversees all activities of the fire department; manages the day-to-day operation of the fire department through a Lieutenant.
  • Plans, implements, and reviews departmental goals.
  • Develops general policies for the administration of the department and establishes operational standards.
  • Directs administrative functions, including planning, personnel administration, equipment purchasing and allocation of resources.
  • Serves as the On-Scene Commander at larger fires, major disasters, and other incidents.
  • Consults with the Station Manager and other departmental managers on issues relating to fire protection, fire prevention and other related services.
  • Acts as technical advisor to the Station Manager for disaster preparedness and contingency operations.
  • Ensures fire protection and prevention meet contractual objectives.
  • Serves as Fire and Emergency Services representative in the Emergency Operations Center.
  • Inspects and ensures the overall effectiveness of departmental operations.
  • Ensures all training programs, including recurring proficiency training are effective; drills employees on emergency response, modern firefighting and fire prevention methods.
  • Ensures fire department facilities, apparatus and equipment are in proper working order.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports on a variety of fire department related activities.
  • Manages an effective fire prevention program that includes scheduled and unscheduled safety inspections to identify fire safety hazards; recommends program changes when necessary and manages personnel to ensure effectiveness.
  • Reviews all site work on the project to verify compliance with fire safety standards.
  • Identifies and reviews the status of Air Station fire deficiencies and coordinates with other agencies for necessary corrective actions.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Accountable for:

  • Fire suppression, firefighting, and first responder methods, practices, and techniques.
  • National Fire Codes and other fire related regulations, directives, standards, and operating procedures.
  • Ingress and safety procedures for military and civilian aircraft.
  • Disaster preparedness and planning.
  • OSHA, Department of Defense (DoD) and Air Force fire protection policies and practices.
  • Supervisory concepts, principles, and practices.
  • Operations and maintenance of various types of fire and emergency response equipment and vehicles.
  • The use of common office machinery, including copiers, fax machines and computers.
  • Directing and coordinating a multidisciplinary staff in firefighting, fire prevention and other fire service-related activities.
  • Making immediate decisions in an emergency situation.
  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Reviewing work products to ensure conformance to standards and/or contractual obligations.
  • Maintaining excellent working relationships with subordinates, peers, customers, superiors, and outside agencies.
  • Assessing, defining, and conducting training of subordinate personnel of the mission.

Safety (Personal Protection) Requirements: **

May require hard hat, safety goggles, safety shoes, ear protection, Hard toed safety shoes or boots, safety glasses or goggles, gloves, etc (as required by task)
