Job Description:
POSITION OBJECTIVES
This is a highly responsible administrative and technical position responsible for the enforcement of the current Florida Fire Prevention Code.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Issues orders for improvement of work methods and for enforcing rules and regulations.
  • Performs fire plan reviews.
  • Performs fire investigations, fire data collection, fire code legislation development, and public safety education.
  • Assigns personnel and equipment to duties and utilizes personnel as necessary.
  • Responds to major alarms and personally commands firefighting operations.
  • Directs the inspection of buildings and other properties for fire hazards.
  • Enforces fire prevention regulations and takes action to secure abatement of Fire hazards.
  • Performs related work as required. These additional duties may be representative of tasks typically performed by those in a lesser or more advanced job grade.

This position is part of the City’s Emergency Management Team and, as such, shall be expected to perform all duties that are assigned during an emergency management operation.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Directly supervise all subordinate supervisors in the Fire Safety/Fire Marshal’s office.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities including interviewing, hiring and training new employees; planning, assigning, directing and reviewing work; mentoring, motivating, coaching and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university related to Fire Science or Public Administration, with additional course work in personnel management and administration.
  • Ten (10) years of Fire/rescue experience in all phases of Fire/rescue operations, four (4) years of which must have been at the command level; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations
o Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.
o Fire Standards Certificate
o State of Florida Fire Inspector certification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Florida Fire Prevention Code, Emergency Management and knowledgeable of the National Fire Protection Association standards and the ability to apply this knowledge to varied fire control and prevention problems.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the City of Port Orange.
  • Ability to work the public and employees.
  • Ability to plan, initiate and carry out long-term programs in the Fire/Rescue Department administration, employee training and fire prevention.
  • Ability to plan, assign and coordinate activities performed by a large group of employees in varied firefighting work.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret work related documents.
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply principles of mathematical concepts as applied to this position.
  • Ability to define problems, collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talks or hears.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color visions, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to drive at all times as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee typically works indoors in an office environment but is occasionally required to work outdoors exposed to extreme heat and adverse weather conditions.
  • The employee occasionally works near moving vehicles; in precarious places; and may occasionally be exposed to other hazardous environmental conditions.
  • Position is subject to drug testing.
Compensation Details:
Advertised pay starts at $65,175.24
