Description
The Dane County Department of Waste & Renewables (W & R) has a Full-Time (1.0 FTE) vacancy for an Environmental Technician position in Madison, WI.

DEFINITION
The Dane County Department of Waste & Renewables (W&R) owns and operates the County's landfills, household hazardous waste collection site, a construction and demolition recycling facility, various other recycling programs, and a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Plant that converts landfill gas to pipeline quality RNG. This classification is responsible for monitoring and maintaining environmental systems and collecting data to demonstrate compliance with environmental regulations and site operating permits, licenses, and approvals. This classification is responsible for assisting in the operation, maintenance and monitoring (OM&M) of the landfill gas wellfields, leachate collection systems, and groundwater monitoring systems. Objectives include odor control, safety, and compliance with applicable regulations, and maximizing landfill gas flows, gas quality and revenues.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Performs operation, maintenance, and monitoring (OM&M) of the landfill gas wellfields, leachate collection and transmission systems, groundwater monitoring systems, gas migration systems, and other environmental systems. Monitors landfill gas wellfield performance and adjusts operating equipment as necessary to achieve targets for landfill gas quality and quantity. Performs required compliance readings on extraction system and monitoring probes and collects samples for laboratory analysis. Maintains database of monitoring data and as-built drawings for the wellfield and other landfill monitoring locations. Performs or coordinates and records equipment inspections and maintenance in computer maintenance management system (CMMS). Diagnoses and corrects adverse operating conditions and equipment malfunctions, including emergency repairs associated with the landfill gas extraction system. Assists with environmental sampling and monitoring. Works collaboratively with other Department staff to achieve targets for odor control, safety, compliance and gas plant performance.
Education, Experience & Special Requirements
Education, Training and Experience:
Must have any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to an associate's degree in environmental science, environmental health and safety, environmental engineering, engineering technology or one (1) year of direct experience in Solid Waste Management, Landfill Gas System Operations, Pipeline or Natural Gas Operations, Digester Operations, or another related field or industry.
Special Requirements:
Must have a valid driver's license, a good driving record and access to reliable personal transportation, or equivalent. Must be available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and during emergencies or unexpected maintenance events. Must be able to be on-call for night and weekend work.

For Bilingual Positions:

Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:
Ability to lift 70 pounds maximum with frequent lifting (up to 50 times a day) and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Ability to wear a respirator. Ability to enter and work in small confined spaces. Physically capable of running light equipment; operating hand tools and power tools; climbing ladders; working from heights; working with poor lighting; and working in conditions of wind, dust, rain, snow, ice, extreme temperatures, and excessive noise.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of or ability to learn best practices for landfill gas extraction system and wellfield management. Knowledge of principles of landfill gas extraction system design and construction. Knowledge of the regulations governing practices and methods related to solid and hazardous waste management, recycling, and disposal. Knowledge of laboratory sampling, analysis and data analysis/interpretation. Knowledge or experience with the principles of land surveying. Ability to work independently or as a team to analyze problems and interpret data, develop solutions, and implement sound alternatives. Knowledge of the regulations governing practices and methods related to solid and hazardous waste management. Ability to plan, organize, coordinate and evaluate work. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing to prepare technical reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective, professional working internal and external relationships. Ability to be creative, flexible, self-motivated, organized, and quality and customer service oriented. Knowledge of various applicable software applications including AutoCAD, Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Word, Excel, etc.).

Bilingual Pay: Employees who work in bilingual designated positions receive an additional $2.00 per hour.
Undesirable Hours Premium Pay: Employees may receive undesirable hours pay of $2.00 for anytime worked between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m and for anytime on Saturday and/or Sunday. (not applicable with all employee groups).
Paid Parental Leave: Dane County also provides 12 weeks of paid parental leave for birth or adoption of a child.
Caregiver Leave: Dane County offers 80 hours of paid leave to care for an ill family member.
Telecommuting: Telecommuting allows employees to work remotely for all or part of their workweek. Dane County considers telecommuting to be a viable, flexible option when both the employee and the job are suited to such an arrangement. Dane County will permit telecommuting when it benefits the productivity of the employee and their department and if determined by employee's department that telecommuting is not detrimental to either the County or the employee.
Student Loan Forgiveness: If you are employed by a government or not-for-profit organization, you may be able to receive loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.
WI Retirement System: Employees hired after 7-1-11 must be expected to work a minimum of 1200 hours annually to be enrolled in the Wisconsin Retirement System when hired.
