Environmental Science Technician

Description: This Technician role is in the Standard Seed Testing area. This involves preparing seed samples for planting, germinating, and growing starter plants to gain data on yields and seed performance. They support over 400 different species of seeds and they identify all of them in this lab.

• Review testing plan and seedling layouts in order to create lab scale growing plots.
• Prepare seeds, soil, and plant growth media for planting.
• Germinate seeds, plant seeds, and monitor growth at various stages for subjective and qualitative data on yields and growth performance.
• Clean glassware, maintain stock/chemical inventory, and clean the work space
• Document via paper and LIMS to track samples and provide data for customers.

3 main functions of the lab overall:

1) Purity or Noxious testing: What contaminants are in the seed? Sorting seeds to determine.

2) Planting: Standing and mixing soil, seed, and sand to prepare plots for planting and plant seeds.

3) Evaluating: Review previously planted seeds for any abnormal seedlings, this is done with a partner to double check yields.

Qualifications:

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline
• Lab-based or greenhouse experience
