The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has four (4) openings for Engineer Intern(s) in the Project Engineering Department, located in Lansing, MI.
Position Summary:
Job Type: Full-Time Summer Internship
Dates: May 06, 2024 - August 02, 2024
Pay Rate: $21.00 per hour.
Position Summary:
Project Engineering is responsible for engineering, designing, and problem solving for Electric, Water, Steam, and Chilled Water Facilities, Substations, and Office Spaces. The intern will work on a small independent project or task, or they will work on a portion of a much larger project in conjunction with an experienced engineer. The intern will have full responsibility for that work and experience the duties of an engineer from start to completion. The exact project will be selected based on discipline that is hired and projects available. Disciplines are (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil/Structural, Chemical, or Process Engineer) Potential projects include completing a small portion of a large project or independently engineer and design smaller projects in electric generating stations, drinking water plants, steam heat plants, chilled water plants, electric solar projects, plant control projects, or office upgrades. The PED Engineering Intern will also help with studies, material specifications, estimates, budgets, and drawing revisions. The PED Engineering Intern will learn from, and be supervised by a mentor of the Project Engineering Department
Essential Functions:
  • Design a small project or portion of a larger project and monitor through the various design phases with the guidance of a mentor.
  • Aid in active electrical, mechanical, or civil structural projects and activities.
  • Assist with the Design, Construction, Commissioning, Material Procurement, Construction Specifications, and other similar tasks.
  • Investigate and Specify materials needed on projects throughout the BWL.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Required to follow BWL Safety Manual and wear personal protective equipment for all field work.
  • Attends training and safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by the BWL or government agency such as MIOSHA.
  • Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Job Specifications:
  • Currently enrolled in a program with a focus of Engineering at an educational institute and with junior or senior status during the summer of 2024.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:
Employees are required to follow the BWL Safety Manual and wear required personal protective equipment, adhere to BWL safety rules and regulations, attend all training for safety awareness or skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL, or governmental agency such as MIOSHA. Normal office and occasional field work. Field conditions may include heat, cold, dust, and/or noise. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen and small numbers.
Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
