Summary of Position
Effective March 1st - This position's hourly rate will increase to 18.25/hour.
Under the supervision of the City Engineer, with work direction from Engineering staff, assists in the design and construction of Public Works improvements such as: field surveying, drafting, inspection activities, and other duties including mapping and record-keeping using AutoCAD, GIS, and asset management software.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Assists in preparation and drafting of plans for improvement projects, utilizing AutoCAD as needed.
- Assists in the inspection of improvement projects, including observation of construction, measurement of quantities, and observing or performing material testing.
- Serves as a rod person or instrument person to the survey crew.
- Takes accurate and complete notes of improvement projects.
- Prepares exhibits, maps, and visual aids for improvement projects.
- Recommends changes in design to City Engineer and Engineering Staff.
- Provides City Engineer and Engineering Staff with pertinent information regarding improvement projects.
- Serves as a contact to the public on improvement projects, acting on reasonable property owner requests as appropriate. Directs property owners to proper supervisors as needed.
- Performs inspections of work sites with right-of-way management permits and stormwater management permits to ensure compliance with City ordinances and standards, and enters inspection information into City's permit management system.
- Performs other related duties as necessary or as assigned by the City Engineer.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications
Minimum Qualification
- Currently a student in good standing, studying: Civil Engineering, Civil Technology, Public Works, or Land Surveying.
- Completed course requirements: Land Surveying and Materials Testing.
- Valid driver's license with good driving record, and the ability to drive.
- Prior experience with AutoCAD and GIS desired.
- Prior experience in construction staking and inspection desired.
Desired Qualifications
- Completed coursework in land surveying and materials testing.
- Experience working with AutoCAD and/or GIS.
- Experience in construction staking and observation.

Work Environment & Physical Demands
Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors. Employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Employee is subject to noise in presence of heavy construction equipment, but generally free from additional work hazards.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and exchange information with others both in person and over the telephone. The employee is frequently required to remain in a stationary position, as well as operate computers and other office equipment, such as a copy machine, printer, and telephone, as well as equipment/tools consistently found in drafting, project surveying, and inspection work. Staff will frequently read and interpret documents, including construction plans and specifications. Staff will frequently traverse around the City to project sites. Will occasionally lift items weighing up to 25 pounds.
