Overview

Cedar Falls Utilities is currently recruiting for a full-time Electric Production Engineer Specialist to join our Electric Production department. This position is responsible for assisting the Electric Production Manager, Plant Engineer, and the Environmental Compliance Coordinator by providing support to ensure a safe, effective, and efficient operation of the Electric Production facilities.

The Electric Production Engineer Specialist works under general supervision of the Electric Production Manager.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Full-time, Exempt Salary position. 
  • Starting wage is based upon individual qualifications. $93,650 - $123,080.
  • Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm with a half hour lunch.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with tracking and monitoring overall plant performance including but not limited to the combustion and steam turbines and their corresponding generators and boilers, as well as reciprocating engine generator sets. Identify, trend, and analyze plant heat rate and efficiency. Recommend changes and enhancement to ensure reliable and economical operations.
  • Analyze control issues, equipment failures, and other plant problems as they arise. Determine root causes and recommend recovery plans with cost effective solutions to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Perform work alongside others with plant engineering projects. Plan and carry out generator, turbine, or engine maintenance outages. Execute plant equipment electrical testing, documentation, and trend analysis to ensure high availability and low forced outage rates. Ensure all test equipment used in the plant is calibrated to IAW OEM specifications.
  • Collaborate with operations and maintenance supervisors to resolve operational and maintenance issues as they arise. Develop, communicate, and perform work practices and procedures to keep site drawings and documentation up to date. Serve as administrator of the plant CMMS.
  • Support the Environmental Compliance Coordinator for CEMS monitoring and performance issues, RATA's, and other environmental programs. Ensure quarterly EDR's are completed on time without errors.
  • Provide guidance on long range planning and strategies for maintaining or replacing equipment and prioritizing plant projects. Aid with developing and tracking the annual departmental budget. Assist with the development and administration of contracts and work scope for external contractors in accordance with CFU policies.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes positive relations with customers, co-workers, management, vendors, and contractors. Recognize team needs by encouraging involvement and reviewing results. Establishes work procedures and processes that supports company and departmental standards, procedures, and strategic directives.
Qualifications

Education:

  • An associate degree in a relevant engineering discipline, such as Electronic Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering Technology.

Experience: 

  • Five years in Power Plant or related field.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of:
    • Power Plant operations and maintenance regarding:
      • Steam boilers/turbines
      • Simple cycle/combination cycle combustion turbines
      • Reciprocating engines
      • Synchronous generators
      • All associated auxiliary equipment
    • ABB Symphony Plus DCS and Allen Bradley PLC controls
    • CEMS
    • CAD software
    • Plant instrumentation and associated software
    • Electrical/mechanical components, systems, and test equipment
    • Applicable codes, standards, and industry regulation requirements
    • Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Ability to: Utilize computer databases and software; multi-task and communicate effectively dealing with internal and external customers; utilize critical thinking and problem-solving techniques; effectively manage stress; carry out work assignments as instructed in a timely manner to provide the best results; maintain accurate records; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work; must be able to respond promptly to emergencies.

 

Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions:

  • Work involves sedentary to light work in an office setting. There is frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, sit, lift objects (up to 25 pounds) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday. On occasion, employee may be exposed to extreme weather conditions, hazardous materials, dangerous machinery, and potential physical harm. Possible exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures, moving within close proximity to moving machinery/equipment and electrical hazards. Employee accommodations for physical or mental disabilities will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
