Description:

Hofstra University is seeking a self-motivated camp professional for the Director ofSummer Camps and Youth Programs position, who demonstrates a love of Summer camp and all it has to offer. Reporting to the Senior Advisor and Chief of Staff to the President, the Director ofSummer Camps and Youth Programs provides vision, leadership, and daily administration for Hofstra University’s summer camp programs which serve over 5,000 youth from Long Island and the surrounding areas. Working collaboratively with internal and external constituents, the Director will ensure robust offerings that align with regulatory requirements and community-building goals. The ideal candidate possesses the energy, talent, vision, and experience required to manage and further our successful program. This position requires the ability to work additional hours, including some weekends, as needed from April – August.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Designs, delivers, and evaluates camp programs that meet the needs and interests of youth, target markets, and the University.
  • Oversees the daily operations of Hofstra University Summer Day Camps including food service, facilities, hospitality, program offerings, business, and health care.
  • Develops, evaluates, and maintains best practices to ensure the highest level of safety and programmatic quality.
  • Remains current with information on the developmental needs of youth and applies them in the camp setting.
  • Develops regular systems to seek feedback and analyze input from youth, families, employees, and senior leadership regarding the quality, safety, and overall satisfaction.
  • Develops and implements crisis and risk management procedures.
  • Works closely with internal and external constituents to develop robust program offerings that meet community and university needs.
  • Develops strategic camper recruitment by utilizing appropriate data collection and analysis to ensure program growth, competitive program offerings, and targeted seasonal employee recruitment.
  • Creates and implements systems to analyze current population, determine enrollment needs, and engage communities to grow enrollment and impact.
  • Analyzes, enhances, and supplements current seasonal employee recruitment and retention practices to ensure the highest quality, and most dedicated summer team.
  • Oversees financial operations and spending to meet revenue goals.
  • Develops cost-sharing partnerships to enhance programming and funding.
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises seasonal and year-round employees.
  • Manages processes to hire, train, supervise, and evaluate approximately 400 seasonal employees.
  • Conducts efficiency reviews of the department to ensure proper utilization of staff talent and work-load distribution.
  • Secures sufficient coverage in health care staffing and their implementation of the health care plan and practices.
  • Develops and oversees the business management functions of the camp including financial record keeping, enrollment system, family communication, and outreach protocols.
  • Oversees the systematic approach to database management for campers, families, alumni, and donors.
  • Works collaboratively with internal and external groups to ensure the operation and enhancement of all camp programs.
  • Conducts annual assessment of facilities and maintenance needs.
  • Conducts annual physical risk assessment of all camp areas.
  • Ensures compliance with all accreditations and all regulatory requirements (ACA, Nassau County Board of health, etc.)
  • Cultivates and maintains working relationships with relevant neighborhood agencies, organizations, and initiatives.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum five years of experience in directing camps or related Youth Programs.
  • Familiarity with staff certifications necessary for licensure and ACA accreditations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and ownership of projects, prioritize and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage, lead, and develop a team.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with Excel, Budget management and Data management.
  • Proficiency in computer literacy and Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work additional hours as needed including weekends.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience with data analysis.
