PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Development Officer role is responsible for leading the fundraising and board development efforts in their assigned geographic area with a focus on developing individual, corporate, and foundation donors as well as increasing board member engagement and support by identifying, prospecting, cultivating and soliciting annual, major and capital gifts. The Development Officer will manage their own portfolio and develop a county specific annual work plan based on the department's strategic plan in collaboration with the Vice President of Development.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

  • Board Development – Effectively manage and develop area board for effectiveness and performance within assigned county. Responsible for board development activities including identification, recruitment, orientation, involvement, evaluation and recognition.
  • Donor Relationship Advancement – Manage and maintain a portfolio of 350+ current donors and prospects. Identify new prospects to add to portfolio. Cultivate relationships with donors through board member introductions, engagement in operational programming, Club tours, one on one meetings, etc. Steward existing donors though frequent communication and relationship building to encourage increased future giving. Orchestrate strategic major gift asks from donors.
  • Annual Goal- Make direct, face-to-face solicitations as well as support board members with their solicitation to successfully meet a personal annual fundraising goal set on a yearly basis with the support of the board of directors.
  • Major Gift Planning – Identify key stakeholders in portfolio and high-capacity prospects in the community to strategically cultivate, steward and ask for support. Plan unique correspondence, engagement opportunities, appeals, individually tailored proposals and stewardship to secure investment from major gift prospects. Create future actions in the CRM to track relationship development and progress and log all interactions.
  • Customer Relationship Management Platform Utilization – Effectively utilize online workspace to complete actions assigned to you to manage donor relationships in assigned portfolio. Accurately input information in donor records to ensure important details are recorded in the system. Thoroughly log all interactions with donors, community members, and vendors to show activity and plan for future actions. Utilizing the CRM, create and implement moves management plans for each major donor and prospect.
  • Event Implementation – Execute existing fundraising strategy in assigned county through approved events including Faces of the Future, Celebrate the Children, Donor Appreciation Events, and Club level volunteer and engagement opportunities. Collaborate with development, events, and operational teams to ensure event success and donor satisfaction. Demonstrate high attention to detail and intention in event communication and day of event flow.
  • Organizational Advocacy - Meet with individual donors, corporations, foundations, and community leaders, to share the Boys & Girls Clubs message and articulate the need for funding support. Actively represent the organization in assigned region to include speaking engagements, attendance at community events and membership in appropriate organizations.
  • Operational Engagement – Engage in the operational programming at Boys & Girls Club(s) in your assigned region. Meet regularly with operational staff to discuss programs, initiatives, Club tours, donor drop ins, field trips, etc. Implement strategies to engage donors in the work being done in the Club.
  • Team Communication and Collaboration – Correspond with members of development team and others throughout the organization with high frequency. Share updates, express needs, collaborate on projects, help others when needed and where possible, include others on communications to shared relationships.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal: Maintains close, daily contact with board members, donors, Development Department and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain guidelines/ instructions; instruct; and advise/counsel. Maintain close relationships with administrative personnel.

External: Maintains contact with external community groups, foundations, donors, community leaders and Board Members.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Four-year degree required. Degree in Non-profit Management or Business preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience preferred in Boys & Girls Clubs or similar organization.
  • Strongly prefer a candidate residing in county where position is located with knowledge of the donor base in that region.
  • Documented history of successful fundraising and Board development. Experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
  • Knowledge of current trends in charitable giving, particularly in the areas of major gifts, capital campaigns and planned giving.
  • Experience with the Benevon Model and event management preferred.
  • Ability to conceptualize the agency philosophy and to communicate the concept to others with passion and with desired results. Ability to motivate and inspire others to believe in the organization's mission.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills and the ability to facilitate large and small group presentations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suites and knowledge of donor management databases.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills and the ability to multi-task and meet aggressive deadlines.
  • Ability to travel in assigned geographic area and attend functions with flexible hours.

Physical requirements: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and policy manuals. The employee must have the ability to clearly and concisely exchange/receive ideas, facts and or technical information with others. The employee is required to use hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb or balance, and stoop, jump, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is required to operate a motor vehicle. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds. Working environment: Administrative environment.
