Job description

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Jail Administrator, the Correctional Officer is responsible for the safety and wellbeing of inmates; conducts intake procedures; serves meals; monitors inmate behavior; assists in treatment programs; explains rules; maintains jail according to procedures; and performs other duties as apparent or assigned.

The incumbent exemplifies the characteristics of a collaborative, innovative and resilient work culture and models the appropriate behavior to create and maintain a resilient work culture within the department. The incumbent works in partnership with other employees, departments/divisions, agencies and the public in delivering effective and innovative services.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

  • Conducts intake procedures.
  • Completes various legal forms such as criminal histories, release on own recognizance forms, bail and bond forms for various county, state, and federal agencies.
  • Maintains appropriate jail records as required by law and to decrease jail liability.
  • Administers, maintains and documents the custody of and responsibility for legal evidence (urine tests, video tapes, and contraband).
  • Fingerprints and takes photographs; conducts cell searches; frisks and performs body searches for weapons, drugs and other contraband; examines and inspects items brought into the jail.
  • Patrols jail area to enforce federal, state, and jail laws and regulations, and to provide security and detect violations.
  • Disciplines inmates for minor infractions, writes incident reports, gathers evidence, offers suggestions to the Jail Administrator on major violations, and conducts cell checks.
  • Responsible for the security of the jail; inspects the facilities daily to determine compliance with state regulations, to check for security malfunctions and to maintain a healthy environment.
  • Manages jail canteen, places orders for supplies, accounting of inmate's money and expenditures, collects Huber fees from inmates, and orders jail maintenance supplies as needed.
  • Serves meals, distributes personal hygienic supplies and cleaning supplies to inmates, does laundry for inmates and disburses medication to inmates.
  • Makes evaluations and consults with the Jail Administrator as to the appropriate medical needs of inmates, evaluates suicidal tendencies of inmates and makes arrangements for suicide prevention in the jail setting, and evaluates the condition of intoxicated inmates and cares for them appropriately.
  • Supervises the activities of the inmates, oversees maintenance staff in the jail setting, supervises and helps volunteers within the jail, and assists in the training of new jail staff.
  • Conducts crisis intervention, interprets laws and procedures to inmates and their families, handles and resolves complaints of inmates.
  • Provides information for programs such as AA, G.E.D., Work Release/STS and religious programs.
  • Transports inmates to court or visitations.
  • Documents and logs medication received, telephone calls, mail logs, visitations, and problems.

Additional Functions:

  • The incumbent is responsible for effectively managing his or her workload to achieve departmental goals. Assures that responsibilities are performed in compliance with federal and state regulations and county policies and procedures.
  • Participates in professional staff development. Participates in training and education opportunities to maintain and improve proficiency.
  • Performs other related functions as apparent or assigned.

  • Knowledge and ability to operate modern law enforcement technology with proficiency, including software and equipment.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one (1) years of related customer service experience
  • Minimum of six (6) months computer experience

Conditions of Employment

A. B. Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota.

D. Ability to work extended, evening and weekend hours as needed.

F. Must successfully complete a background check.

G. Must successfully complete physical, psychological & drug/Alcohol testing

H. Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.

I. Performs physical/mental demands of the work environment requirements for this position.

J. Attendance during regularly scheduled work hours, and outside regular hours as necessary.

K. Effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers.

L. Must comply with data practices policies and standards relative to not public data. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished the not public data must be properly stored according to county policies and the Minnesota Statutes.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

Physical/Mental Demands:

Requires moderate physical effort working regularly with lightweight materials and occasionally with heavy weight materials (over 60 pounds) or occasional requirements for continuing periods of difficult work positions.

Working Conditions:

Working conditions where several of the disagreeable elements (dust, heat, fumes, cold, noise, vibration or wetness) are occasionally present to the extent of being objectionable or regular exposure to work situations which could result in incapacitating accidents or health hazards that could result in serious injury or, on occasion, loss of life (or) serious mental stress involved which could, over a period of time, result in a temporary mental disorder, severe mental anguish, and/or physical illness.

Hours of Work:

The position is full time (1.0 FTE) and is required to work rotating shifts, weekends, nights, holidays, irregular hours, and may be required to work overtime. Additional hours may be assigned to cover personnel shortages or unforeseen circumstances.

Equipment Utilized:

· This position will be located at the Waseca County Security Building

· Operates standard office equipment and computer software programs as related to assigned area

· Operates various equipment including handcuff’s, shackles, belt chains, oxygen equipment, defibrillator and other first aid equipment, video recorders, copy machine, cameras, and (PBT) Preliminary Breath test.

· This position does require the operation of an automobile.
