Are you looking for a career as a Correctional Officer? The Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Office has an opening for a full-time, regular Correctional Officer. The Correctional Officer performs protective service work to maintain safety and security within the jail facility.

General Definition of Work

Performs protective service work to maintain safety and security with in the facility.  Provide information to other facilities by email, phone or in written form.  Handle complaints, settling disputes and resolving conflicts between inmates. Ensuring all paper work correct for all new intake of inmates and all discharges of inmates.  Complete knowledge in the RMS system, Dynamic Imaging, Predatory Offender registration system, radio usage, telephone system first aid, CPR and Minnesota Repository of Arrest Photos.  Ability to control extremely stressful situations yet still stay calm enough to provide the aid and assistance that is needed at that time for that particular situation to that particular inmate.  Have intimate understanding of the Use of Force Statute and the ability to apply that statute to that situation, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Jail Administrator.

Qualification Requirements

Essential Functions

  • Maintain safety and security with in a secure perimeter of the 80 bed jail facility.
  • Insure that all 100 plus cameras are monitored.
  • Control all electronic door locks within a 96,000 Sq. Ft. building
  • Insure all other security equipment is in working order.
  • Interact directly with all inmates while conducting well-being checks every 25 minutes.
  • Documenting all activities and incidents with a precision like manner.
  • Intervene in all physical and nonphysical fights subjecting yourself to bodily harm.
  • Properly file all paper work for Public Defender Applications, Community Connections paperwork, PREA paper work, Off Site Follow up Care and Statement of Rights. 
  • Complete formal inmate counts.
  • Handle all inmate movement for STS and Huber Law.
  • Update all court information in LETG.
  • Collect all Bonds and cash bail.
  • Conduct cell inspections.
  • Distribution of medication.
  • Complete narcotic count prior to and after shift.
  • Scan and distribute all incoming mail prior to distribution.
  • Change out laundry bags.
  • Provide security for nurse, AA/NA teacher and Pastor.
  • Contact all victims before inmate is released, including sending out notification form and logging into RMS.   
  • Process all new adult arrestee’s, suspects, charges greater than Misdemeanor and all Juveniles that are arrested. 
  • Assign proper classification, finger printing detail, assign inmate number and proper sizing of uniform. 
  • Escort all inmate movement within and outside of the secure portion of the jail.  Some of these escorts include but are not limited to medical facilities, mental health case worker appointments, psychiatric hub appointments, recreational room, library room, med-call room and programmer meetings. 
  • Documenting all personal property that an inmate has brought into the facility and maintaining proper inventory and storage of said property.
  • Completing modification and verification paper work.
  • Verification of all POR paper work.
  • Setting up clothing and hygiene packets for new inmates.
  • Contact Dispatch to inactivate warrants.
  • Assist other shifts as needed.
  • Responsible for operations of the vehicle sally port doors
  • Ensure Officer has correctly filled out paper work (I.E. Pre Book, Victim notification).
  • Complete forms for sentenced inmates (expiration dates).
  • -Complete a safety and sanitation inspection every morning.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct fire evacuation drills.
  • Cleaning of post during shift.
  • Conduct an electrical inspection of the facilities interior lighting system.
  • Inspection of all grout seams with in each cell block.
  • Inspection of all security caulking in each cell block
  • Inspection of all security lines (corners) in cell block.
  • Assist with Drug Court (transferring and escort of inmates for meetings).
  • Inspection and documentation of all fire prevention equipment.
  • Count of all restraint devices.
  • Shift briefings
  • Review all inmate telephone calls and texts through the reliance program
  • Attend quarterly meetings with staff.
  • Assist Probation and Pre-Trial release Officer with U/A’s

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the security, rules, regulations and procedures of the institution; thorough knowledge of the practices of modern penology as related to the supervision and care of persons under institutionalized restraint; general knowledge of the methods of operating various communications systems including two way radios; comprehensive skill communicating using various communication systems; comprehensive skill keeping accurate and detailed records pertaining to services provided and prepare reports; comprehensive skill completing records checks; thorough knowledge of operating standard office equipment and related hardware and software; thorough skill of inmate medical records and data works finger printing system, dynamic imaging, handcuffs and leg shackles, X26 taser and restraint chair operations. Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals, compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to deal with upset, irate, irrational people in differing stages of intoxication in a cool, calm and collected manner; ability to multitask and keep in mind the task at hand; ability to give clear, concise and direct instructions verbally; general knowledge of inmate accounting records and pipe time recordkeeping system. Ability to speak distinctly; ability to deal with the public under stressful conditions and remain calm; ability to understand and apply governmental accounting practices in maintenance of financial records; ability to multi task; ability to complete an inmate jail count; ability to calculate inmate release dates; ability to count prescriptions; ability to understand and work with several different personality and culture types; ability to make quick and accurate decisions; ability to display knowledge of inmate rights and laws associated with inmate rights; ability to enforce institutional rules firmly and fairly; ability to detect potential behavior problems of inmates; ability to detect the early symptoms of common health problems; ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; ability to supervise the activities of large groups of inmates; general skill in 2911 code book I.E. DOC rules and regulations; comprehensive skill in LCSO Jail policy and procedure manual, maintenance manual for miscellaneous equipment and LETG manual; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience

Associates/Technical degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires walking, speaking or hearing, frequently using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions ; occasionally requires sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting, climb or balance; work requires ability for close and distance vision, adjust focus, depth perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and detailed or loud talking to convey detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Special Requirements

Excellent communication skills, diverse in various computer programs and are willing to work rotating shifts (two on two off; three on two off; three off two on; 80 hours every two weeks).  Other applicable DOC certifications and training will be provided and must be completed within six months of hire. 

CPR/first aid/defibrillation certification; First responder certification; Taser certification; Use of Force certification;  MyBCA certification; Use of LETG (RMS); Use of Predatory Offender Registration database; Statewide Supervision System, CJIS, Tiger deposits and Reliance telephone system and Dynamic Imaging all within six (6) months of hire.

Applicable training to obtain and maintain certifications will be provided.  Ability to maintain certifications through ongoing education.

National crime information center training, State records system training, and Criminal justice information system training must be completed within one (1) year.

Valid driver's license in the State of Minnesota.

Other Requirements

The incumbent may encounter not public data in the course of these duties. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished, incumbent must properly store the not public data according to the provisions Ch. 13. If a new work assignment requires access to not public data, the incumbent is permitted to access not public data for the work assignment purposes only. Any access to not public data must be strictly limited to the data necessary to complete the work assignment and after the assignment is completed, the employee’s work assignment no longer requires access.

Starting Salary:  $26.49
