Job description

This position reports to the Assistant Athletics Director for Student Services within the Ingram Center for Student-Athlete Success and its primary focus is to monitor the academic progress of student-athletes for assigned sports in the Department of Athletics. In addition, the Student Services Coordinator will be expected to provide student-athletes with academic counseling and support services, refer student-athletes to campus resources and monitor study halls/tutorial services.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for monitoring the academic progress of assigned sports and providing academic counseling and support services as needed
    • Meet regularly with assigned caseload
    • Report academic progress to coaches and sport administrators
    • Check classes for attendance
  • Assist in tracking student-athletes’ compliance with NCAA academic eligibility requirements and progress towards Vanderbilt University undergraduate degree requirements
  • Help student-athletes learn time management skills to assist in balancing the demands of academics and athletics
    • Serve as a sounding board for student-athletes to help them deal with issues surrounding the transition from home life to college
  • Meet with prospective student-athletes and their families as requested
  • Alert professors and/or deans to absences due to university-sanctioned travel to athletic events, medical procedures or illnesses, deaths in the family or other extenuating circumstances that may constitute a missed class
  • Meet with professors, advisors and/or deans as requested
    • Serve as a resource to professors if problems arise regarding a student-athlete in which they would like our assistance
  • Refer student-athletes to appropriate campus resources as needed.
  • Collect and report academic data as needed (e.g., SEC for Academic Honor Roll, Vice Chancellor/Athletics Director, Provost’s Office, Board of Trust, etc.)
  • Monitor evening study halls as assigned
  • Seek intentional professional development opportunities for continued growth
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Athletics Director for Student Services or Athletics Senior Management team
  • Serve as a role model for student-athletes in terms of upholding integrity, cooperation, self-reflection and stressing the importance and benefits of education
  • Work in a cooperative, team atmosphere to support student-athletes’ needs
  • Comply with all NCAA and SEC rules and regulations
    • Work in conjunction with the department’s compliance office to stay current on all rules and regulations to ensure we are operating with the highest level of integrity

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is required .
  • Master’s Degree is preferred .
  • 1-2 years experience within football academics at an NCAA Division I athletics program is preferred .
