COPYWRITER

Who You Are

You're a connoisseur of culture but more specifically words. You’ll read anything: the back of a pasta box, all text in TikToks, your cousin’s new favorite book, fabric care labels, quippy airport signage, etc. Most importantly, you read ads. Even banner ads. Even billboards. You love building tiny universes out of letters and sounds, and you're hungry to continue to hone your craft. You are a true blue copywriter, and we're looking for someone like you.


Who We Are

Madwell is a Brooklyn-based creative collective built to disrupt the traditional agency model. Why? Because we believe successful marketing can be anything. And we love that. We were founded in 2010 in Bushwick, Brooklyn and still call that colorful, creative neighborhood home. (We also call Denver home—that’s where you’ll find our sister office.) We believe that wild creativity can live happily alongside a laser-focus on results, and we consistently work with a wide range of clients including cosmetics, telcom, spirits, and oh so much more.


What You’ll Do

So what might you do here as a writer? Well, the sky’s the limit. Here are just a few very real assignments our writers have tackled and loved:

  • The backstory for a fictional crocodile brand mascot
  • Music video concepts (more than one)
  • A cocktail book
  • A live-streamed, choose-your-own adventure IRL video game experience
  • A concept and name for a ‘70s-themed game show for Pride
  • A mythical sibling for Cupid
  • A sleep podcast based on a beloved graphic novel
  • A website about eyebrows
  • Songs (more than one)

Day-to-day you’ll be working with an interdisciplinary team of fellow creatives, strategists, account managers, and producers to tackle assignments of all shapes and sizes. At Madwell, every day is different and we kindly ask that you bring your whole brain to work.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Producing long- and short-form copy across accounts and media, both for existing business and new business
  • Developing insightful concepts—big and small—consistent with creative briefs and client demands
  • Contributing to brand guidelines, especially the voice and tone sections
  • Developing taglines, manifestos, headlines, CTAs, and all the good and necessary stuff that a 360° campaign demands
  • Helping to develop content and maintain social media accounts for a variety of clients
  • Contributing to pitches, proposals, and statements of work
  • Completing all assigned work on time and regularly providing status updates to team leads
  • Constantly combing your work (and others’) for logic, grammar, and consistency

Our Must-Haves

  • Ultimate command of the English language
  • The ability to flex your tone and style to suit the client or assignment
  • Familiarity with marketing best practices and principles
  • Basic understanding of editing best practices and a keen eye for proofreading
  • Experience writing any of the following: copy for websites or apps, social media (bonus points for TikTok), packaging and print collateral, video and audio scripts, programmatic display, billboards, you get the idea
  • Comfortability partnering with designers, working alongside other writers, and flying solo
  • Able to negotiate personalities and ideas as part of the collaborative process
  • A willingness to come at a problem again and again from different angles
  • Thick-skinned and even-keeled under pressure
  • Equal parts confidence, humility, and curiosity

Where You’ve Been

  • 1-3 years of professional writing experience; agency or in-house experience is preferred but not required

Salary Range: $70,000 - $90,000

  • This is a hybrid role based out of our NYC or Denver office. You must be located within commuting distance of Brooklyn, NY or Denver, CO to be considered for this role.
