The Carl R.Woese Institute for Genomic Biology is seeking a Community Engagement Program Coordinator or Community Engagement Program Manager to join our team. This is a multi-level, single hire search, where the title and compensation will be determined by qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will build stable and meaningful collaborations between the University, IGB, partner institutions, and public K-12 schools in Champaign County, Illinois, and with historically marginalized community groups.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Community Engagement Program Coordinatorwill be responsible for the following activities:
• Co-create new productive partnerships between the University and the Champaign County communities.
o Build capacity for meaningful collaborations in outreach with education partners on the university campus and partner institutions (such as Parkland Community College).
o Collaborate with between campus and community partnerships to strengthen and expand existing partnerships and build new ones, such as the IGB outreach office, as well as in the community and at partner institutions.
o Serve as the liaison between the communities, IGB, and University participants to encourage meaningful reciprocal Community Engagement activities.
• Assist with the expansion of Cena y Ciencias (CyC), a science outreach program providing high-quality, inquiry-based science activities for K-12 students and their families. Develop contacts and strategies within school systems, dual language programs, and community organizations to engage in the expansion of CyC to include additional language groups and grade levels within the Champaign-Urbana-Rantoul community and throughout Illinois.
• Provide programmatic support by working closely with faculty and researchers in the IGOH theme and the GEMS institute to plan, lead, and coordinate various Community Engagement events, including securing venues and staffing, obtaining supplies, recruiting volunteers, publicizing events, coordinating catering, transportation and other logistics, and serving as the point of contact before and during events.
The Community Engagement Program Manager will be responsible for the above activities, as well as:
• Coordinate with schools and the community on the expansion of Cena y Ciencias (CyC), a science outreach program providing high-quality, inquiry-based science activities for K-12 students and their families. Develop contacts and strategies within school systems, dual language programs, and community organizations to engage in the expansion of CyC to include additional language groups and grade levels within the Champaign-Urbana-Rantoul community and throughout Illinois.
• Develop a program to mentor and manage undergraduate and master degree-seeking students in internships that engage input from different community spheres to co-create sustainable partnerships and strategies for formal and informal engagement.
• Serve as a community advocate in discussions and development of administration, faculty, staff, and student programs at the IGB and other forums on the University campus.
Minimum Qualifications:
Community Engagement Program Coordinator: Bachelor's degree in biology, engineering, science, education, public health, or other STEM-related field. One (1) year of work experience in community organizing and outreach that included volunteer recruitment, communications, and/or community organization leadership.
Preferred qualifications: Bilingual (Spanish-speaking, reading and writing skills).
Community Engagement Program Manager: Bachelor's degree in biology, life sciences, engineering, education, public health, or other STEM-related field. Three (3) years of work experience in coordinating, managing, and training in community-based research programs that included volunteer recruitment, communications, and/or community organization leadership.
Preferred qualifications: Bilingual (Spanish-speaking, reading and writing skills). Master's degree in public health, engineering, education, communication, ethnographic methods, or social or behavioral sciences.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (both levels):

• Excellent organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions Comments (both levels):
Travel off-site throughout Champaign County and possibly throughout Illinois to community meetings, schools, and academic meetings such as SACNAS National Meeting.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the end of the posting period. The salary and position level is commensurate on qualifications and experience.
