Organizational Overview:

Since being founded locally in 1985, Make-A-Wish Illinois has granted more than 17,000 wishes and continues its mission to share the power of a wish with children in all 102 counties across the state.

A wish can be a game-changer for a child with a critical illness. This belief guides us in everything we do at Make-A-Wish. It inspires us to grant life-changing wishes for children going through so much. Life-changing wish journeys are made possible by dedicated staff and volunteers who fulfill the work of our mission, helping children discover, create, fulfill and experience the lasting impact of their most heartfelt wish.
This internship provides firsthand experience in community building and content creation for media outlets along with a comprehensive view of nonprofit operations. The Community Engagement intern works with the Senior Community Engagement Manager and the Community Engagement Manager located in Peoria and Springfield respectively to help coordinate activities to ensure and enhance service and presence throughout the state.

NOTE: This position can be located in either in either our Peoria office or our Chicago office.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Research, writing, preparing and submitting press releases and other media communications
  • Assisting with data entry and community resource research
  • Contacting assigned parent groups or referring organizations and individuals
  • Organizing off-site outreach activities to help support community awareness
  • Coordinating mailings
  • Organizing events and RSVP tracking
  • Additional outreach projects, as needed

Time Commitment: Internship will take place from June through August. Part-time, hybrid work with one day in the office per week and remainder of work completed remotely.

Requirements

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, and Access
  • Desire to contribute to the mission of Make-A-Wish

Preferred Qualifications:

Coursework in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, and/or Events Management

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be able to work in a hybrid environment and commute to our downtown Chicago office one day per week or our Peoria office.
  • Minimum age for all internships is 18
  • Selected candidates will be asked to participate in a criminal background check.
