POSITION: Specialist, Volunteer & Community Engagement
REPORTS TO: Director, Civic & Partner Engagement

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Volunteer Engagement Specialist will facilitate meaningful engagement between United Way and our corporate and nonprofit partners. This position will implement volunteer events by collaborating internally across departments, including the Resource Development department and the Community Impact department. Volunteer events include care projects completed on-site at our corporate partner locations, in-person volunteer events at our nonprofit partner organizations, and virtual volunteerism across multiple platforms.
The successful candidate in this role will:
- be able to connect with new people and quickly build new relationships with corporate and nonprofit partners
- be incredibly organized and able to manage multiple projects without feeling overwhelmed
- work collaboratively internally across departments and with external groups to strategically spur volunteer activity and steer volunteer energy towards meeting agency needs
- Support the seamless implementation of impactful engagement activities that enthuse, educate and engage donors in order to generate a deeper level of understanding of United Way’s mission and work
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Corporate Liaison (50%)
- Oversee the day-to-day management of volunteer projects with corporate partners, including completing pre-project setup
- Serve as an external representative of the Volunteer Engagement team to United Way’s top tier corporate partners
- Act as internal consultant to the Resource Development Team in determining the best project matches for their accounts.
- Facilitate experiential presentations, United Way Care projects and other engagement opportunities to corporate partners as available and appropriate.
Content Development (20%)
- Create and execute meaningful volunteer projects for United Way’s corporate partners
- Assist with the new skills-based volunteering initiative (pro bono consulting program).
- Co-manage large-scale volunteer events such as April Food Day, 9/11 Day of Service and Uniting for the Holidays
Community Liaison (10%)
- Meet with the community organizations and agencies to understand their volunteer and resource needs and how United Way can support them.
- Manage our internal Galaxy Digital volunteer platform, including approving nonprofit partner opportunities, creating internal opportunities when appropriate, and training nonprofits on how to use the platform.
Event Support (10%)
- Assist with Affinity Group events throughout the year, about 6 total
- Help with registering guests as well as event set-up and clean-up
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Relevant experience and/or education in project management and/or volunteer coordination, event planning and/or comparable role
- Interest in supporting philanthropic community and passion for volunteerism.
- Experience with relationship-building and maintaining relationships.
- Superior written, verbal communication and public speaking skills. Passionate communicator, articulating the United Way message in a way that inspires others to act in service to the organization and the community.
- Outstanding organizational skills, attention to detail and a strong ability to coordinate logistics.
- Ability to meet deadlines and to work autonomously, collaboratively and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability and desire to deliver a high level of customer service.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time, up to 5-8 hours a day for events and independently complete event set up that may require moving up to 40 pounds.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Database experience preferred.
- Must have access to reliable transportation to travel within the region when necessary.
