This position performs responsible work for specific and well-defined limited-term projects within the City's Community Development Division (CDD). CDD collaborates with residents, community-based organizations and other stakeholders in efforts to improve the quality of life for City residents and build cohesion and identity within neighborhoods. In general, these activities aim to benefit members of lower-income households and others who face social or economic barriers. CDD offers financial support to projects that expand or improve the supply of affordable housing, preserve the quality of existing housing stock, support small businesses, create jobs, develop or maintain physical assets within neighborhoods that provide public benefit and contribute to a sense of place, and help neighborhoods plan for the future.
This internship has been developed to advance agency goals and to foster professional development for selected applicants, providing support and direction in an internship framework. The internship will include exposure to:
- Managerial and policy-setting operations and activities,
- Introduction to the organization structure and operations of the agency and the City as a whole, and
- Participation in and responsibility for specific assignments.
Success requires active collaboration with internal and external partners; interpretation and application of complex regulations, policies and procedures; focus on performance outcomes and a commitment to the principles of racial equity and social justice. The Intern will possess or acquire a basic working knowledge of the policies, practices, program objectives and key issues in one or more of these subject areas - neighborhood revitalization, housing and economic development, and the role community facilities play in serving neighborhoods and bringing residents together. Knowledge of the basic concepts of real estate development is desirable.
Work hours/schedule: 10-15 hours during the Spring and Fall semesters (can be flexible based on schedule) and full time in the summer months. This internship ends December 31, 2024.
- Research, collect, analyze, and present data regarding local demographic and housing market trends.
- Assist Department of Planning, Community and Economic Development staff in updating the Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice Report, and Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing actions.
- Work with Community Development Division staff to coordinate, collect, and analyze feedback gained through public participation efforts as part of the development of the City of Madison's 2025-2029 Consolidated Plan.
- Assist in data analysis and narrative development related to the 2025-2029 Consolidated Plan, including needs assessments and development of 5-year goals for the Community Development Division.
- Coordinate the development of goals, priorities, and policies between the Analysis of Impediments and Consolidated Plan based on data trends and community engagement.
- Create visual presentations, including maps and graphs, and brief written summaries to help convey background data to various audiences.
- Research national best practices around housing and Community Development activities and prepare briefs on potential local implementation and policy recommendations
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Actively enrolled in or a recent graduate (May/August/December 2023) of a Bachelor's degree program in business, public administration, planning, public affairs, etc. or a related field.

The employee will be expected to travel throughout the City of Madison to a variety of community outreach events, and to observe and inspect neighborhoods and property (a City vehicle may be used to perform this work).
Physical Requirements
Work will generally be performed in an office environment using standard office equipment for extended period of time.
