Job Purpose:

An Energy Auditor is a building scientist and residential energy efficiency professional who examines the energy efficiency and health & safety of a building and identifies areas for savings by gathering field data, conducting tests and using energy modeling software, in order to reduce the energy consumption, improve the safety of occupants, and increase the lifespan of a building while improving the quality of life and comfort of the occupants.

Essential Duties:

  • Greets and interviews customers with professionalism in their homes and establishes strong client relations. Acts as primary liaison for the department and provides energy education to clients; sets and clarifies expectations of program goals to assure full understanding and that projects advance smoothly.
  • Completes energy audits by gathering all field data and dimensions, including documenting energy consumption, building history, recording existing insulation values in attics, walls and foundations and documenting locations of windows and doors for heat loss calculations.
  • Conducts and categorizes visual inspections of appliances, electrical systems, mechanical systems, ventilation and other building systems. Identifies and advises customers of any health and safety concerns. Documents findings through photographs, field notes and drawings. Performs complete diagnostic testing using blower door, combustion testing, zone pressure diagnostics and infrared cameras.
  • Analyzes and processes data collected energy audit, prepares and organizes client files with energy audit notes, completed diagnostic testing forms, completed heat loss calculations.
  • Enters project data into NEAT (National Energy Audit Tool) audit system and evaluates results to determine approach to project. Completes WISWAP (Wisconsin Weatherization Assistance Program) paper work, completes project cost estimation and prepares detailed work orders for crews and sub-contractors.
  • Manages individual projects by communicating expectations and schedules with customers and contractors. Clarifies work scope, answers questions and recommends best methods for crews and sub-contractors.
  • Conducts in-progress field visits to reviews installed work quality and practices. Accepts installed work, evaluates and approves change requests and reviews contractor invoices.
  • Attends staff Meetings, weekly Auditor Forums, Topic Presentations, monthly QA Meeting conducted by agency and other training conferences.


Requirements:

Skills/qualifications:

Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record, ability to identify and concisely document findings in completed home inspections. Knowledge in the use of spreadsheets and written reports using Microsoft Office. Highly organized, self-motivated and goal-oriented. Ability to resolve conflicts with clients and contractors. Strong in customer relations and communication skills with clients and contractors.

Experience/Education/Training/Certifications:

High School Diploma plus additional training last up to one year. Knowledge of construction inspections, code compliance and weatherization work preferred. Ability to obtain basic Energy Auditor certification, Lead-Safe Renovator and Asbestos Operations, and Maintenance within 6 month of hire. Minimum of two years of progressive work experience in the weatherization field and/or as a crew member or Auditor Trainee. Equivalent experience as a building inspector will be considered.

  • Performs diagnostic testing of mechanical systems, operation of hand operated power tools, climbing ladders etc.
  • During site visits occasional of lifting of heavy objects, crouching, kneeling, crawling, ducking and squatting.
  • Drives company vehicles, performs daily vehicle safety inspection, and logs vehicle maintenance. Properly use and handling of diagnostic tools and testing equipment, digital camera, infrared camera and computer.
  • While performing the duties and responsibilities of this position, the employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The incumbent will regularly sit, and will frequently talk and listen and use hands to finger, handle or touch. Specific vision requirements for this position include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. During the performance of his/her duties, the incumbent will regularly lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.

  • Home visits with potential unpleasant conditions is required; exposure to outdoor weather conditions and poor housekeeping practices. Housing conditions may include insect or vermin infestations, unpleasant odors or allergens, pet feces, raw sewage and unsanitary living conditions.
  • During site inspection may be exposed to possible cuts, scrapes, bumps, bruises, sprains, slivers or eye injury. Potential exposure to traffic accidents, animal bites, falls, overhead hazards or hostile environments. Other potential health exposures to carbon monoxide, natural gas leaks or mold and moisture issues.
  • The employee will work regularly in the office or out in the field environment where the noise level may vary.
