Job Description
This is a non-merit unpaid internship with the Iowa Department of Corrections - Community Based Corrections.
Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.
The Fifth District Department of Corrections is seeking interns for the Spring 2024 college semester. Internships will start in January, 2024. This is an unpaid internship.
Under supervision of department, interns performs various duties as directed in timely, professional, manner. Position will include working with individuals on probation, parole or work release in the 5th District.
Areas for Internships:
Residential Internship - In this internship, you would observe the operations of the Residential Facility. Our facilities are 24/7 operations and the clients reside at the facility. We have 2 locations. Our Fort Des Moines Re-Entry facility is a 240 bed facility that houses our male clients. In this facility, we have 3 buildings which house treatment and work release. Our Fresh Start Women's Center is a 48 bed facility that houses our female clients. This facility is smaller and both treatment and work release are in the same building.
Probation/Parole Internship - In this internship, you would observe the everyday operations of Probation and Parole. You would observe and work along with a Probation/Parole Officer as they meet with clients, go to court, case plan, complete assessments, etc. Many of our Probation/Parole Officers are located in one building, although we provide services to 16 counties and have many different regional offices.
Support Services Internship - In this internship, you would observe different cognitive behavioral groups that are taught by Community Treatment Coordinators. We have many different classes provided by the district, such as ACTV which is for the Iowa Domestic Abuse program, Moving On, Financial Success, and others. Community Treatment Coordinators meet with groups of clients weekly to help rehabilitate and teach skills to individuals.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants for positions in this class must be currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution, as determined by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.
