Position Objective:
To write about and communicate PETA's regulatory toxicology work to both lay and scientific audiences
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
- Perform developmental editing and copyediting of materials for lay and scientific audiences
- Draft news releases, blog posts, website content, social media content (e.g., Twitter/X or LinkedIn posts), newsletters, donor updates, and other materials for lay and scientific audiences
- Review written and video content for factual accuracy within short deadlines
- Maintain a detailed understanding of the department's ongoing projects sufficient to communicate them to the public
- Draft text about the department's ongoing work and victories and keep it organized for sharing with donors and the public
- Translate PETA's regulatory toxicology work into lay language and communicate with other PETA departments to ensure the timely completion of projects that are both interesting and factually accurate
- Draft letters and e-mail responses to inquiries from the media, donors, and the public
- Draft soundbites for media interviews
- Conduct independent online research and analyze technical documents
- Attend regular departmental and organizational calls
- Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
- Bachelor's degree or higher in communications, marketing, or a related field
- Minimum 3-5 years of professional experience in content writing and editing. Experience with scientific content preferred
- Professional experience drafting and posting social media content
- Excellent knowledge of English grammar, proofreading skills, and the ability to write with creativity and technical accuracy
- Ability to understand and interpret technical scientific information
- Ability to apply and leverage knowledge of ongoing projects in PETA’s regulatory toxicology department
- Demonstrated ability to turn around projects in a deadline-intensive environment
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of scientists and the public
- Excellent decision-making skills and the proven ability to take initiative and exercise independent judgment
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times
- Commitment to the objectives of the organization
The salary range for this position is $54,631.00 to $67,724.80 annually. The ultimate salary within this range that will be offered to a qualified candidate will be determined based on the candidate’s experience and the cost of living in the area in which the candidate will live and work.
