Summary
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and is responsible for overseeing all administrative, operational, and programmatic functions within the organization. The COO will provide strategic leadership to ensure optimal organizational performance, financial management, operational efficiency, and staff development. This role involves close collaboration with the Senior Management Team and oversight of the Managing Directors teams, Human Resources staff, and consultants.
Responsibilities
Strategic Planning and Leadership:
- Collaborate with the CEO and key stakeholders to develop and execute the organization's strategic plan.
- Implement processes to align daily operations with strategic goals.
- Cultivate relationships with vendors and partners to enhance operational effectiveness.
- Lead and mentor the Development (Advancement), Programs, Finance, Human Resources, and Operations teams.
- Establish objectives, strategies, and annual work plans in alignment with budgetary goals.
- Monitor performance and recommend adjustments to achieve desired outcomes.
- Assist CEO with business development; Identify and pursue new opportunities and partnerships in line with organizational objectives.
- Represent the organization at key meetings and events as directed by the CEO.
- Oversee risk management and legal activities, including contracts and agreements.
- Manage facilities and access, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
- Review and sign documents in accordance with accounting procedures.
- Ensure Federal and District of Columbia legal compliance and address any related issues.
- Develop and maintain policies and procedures manuals.
- Negotiate and manage relationships with external vendors.
- Supervise office administration activities.
- Direct the HR function, including compensation, benefits, performance management, and employee relations.
- Design and implement staff development initiatives, retreats, and special events.
- Foster a positive work environment, refine staff recognition, and improve the employee experience.
- Supervise HR staff and oversee regulatory compliance.
- Coordinate employee onboarding, benefits administration, and file management.
- Coordinate board meetings and retreats.
- Support the Governance Committee.
- Bachelors degree required, Master's degree or equivalent, preferred.
- 15+ years of progressively responsible related professional experience with operational responsibility with 10+ years in senior management roles in a community-based nonprofit organization.
- Strong commitment to advancing Seaburys mission and to the dignity and wellbeing of older people in general.
- Collaborate with leadership and the Development team to create and support strategies to expand the donor pipeline.
- Oversee the communications and marketing for Seaburys donor outreach and events.
- Build and develop effective and transparent working relationships between the Development (Advancement) and all other departments within the organization, serving as a catalyst in strengthening a collaborative culture.
- Experience with community-based housing and social services is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in program planning and development, financial analysis, HR, and legal compliance.
- Ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends and incorporate them into the organizational plan.
- Skills should include organizational development, personnel management, budget and resource development, and strategic planning.
- Demonstrated success in developing and monitoring systems to manage both operational and programmatic work that involves high levels of collaboration.
- Exceptional writing, verbal communication, decision-making, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and respond appropriately to rapidly changing priorities; flexible, proactive, efficient, and resourceful
- High level of maturity, empathy, and respect for confidential information; highly developed interpersonal and influencing capabilities.

- Fluency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and Google Apps
- Familiarity with Human Resources Information Systems(HRIS), Customer Relationship Management Systems (CRM), IT Security, and Web management tools.
