Job description

Overview
The Chief Accounting Officer (CAO) will lead the Accounting function at Alnylam and is a critical role within our Finance organization.
This role will report to the CFO and become a member of the Finance Leadership Team (FLT). They will work closely with the Financial Planning & Analysis, Tax &Treasury, Global Strategic Sourcing, and Internal Audit functions. The CAO will directly lead all corporate accounting and reporting activities, including: revenue recognition, SEC reporting, global corporate accounting, consolidation, finance operations (i.e., payroll, accounts payable), ERP & financial systems, Sarbanes-Oxley compliance activities, stock compensation administration and have international accounting oversight.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader who exhibits sound business judgment, provides financial leadership, and instills best practices, metrics, systems and processes into the company. They will be highly collaborative and serve as a strategic leader across the organization. The CAO will need be an effective partner across the organization providing financial updates to the Executive Leadership Team, Audit Committee and Board of Directors. This position has considerable daily impact upon the growth and the continued evolution of the Company.
Key Responsibilities
  • Financial Leadership: Oversee the accounting operations in the areas of revenue recognition, disbursements, equity administration and accounting, inventory costing, payroll, accounts payable and all other general ledger activities. These activites include, but are not limited to:
    • Maintains and leads a strong external reporting team in the areas of SEC reporting and analysis, consolidations, intercompany and foreign currency impacts. Ensure that financial compliance activities are comprehensive and conducted in a timely fashion.
    • Maintains and leads a strong technical accounting team in the areas of complex accounting transaction analysis, M&A, collaboration, revenue recognition, and Sarbanes-Oxley Act compliance and be responsible for the setting of accounting policies.
    • Collaborates and works closely with global corporate tax and treasury department.
    • Additional responsibilities include working closely with commercial finance team on elements of commercial contracting and government price reporting, aggregate spend compliance and working with legal group to ensure FCPA/anti-corruption compliance.
    • Works closely with Business Development and Alliance Management teams on collaborations including royalty and milestone management to ensure appropriate accounting.
  • Financial Systems and processes: Leads and manages financial operations, and assess upstream and downstream impacts. They will also work closely with leader of Financial Operations to select and implement an enterprise wide P2P system.
  • Strategic Planning: Takes responsibility for the strategic planning around the proper growth of the controllership activities, considering both dynamic growth of the operations as well as the organizational business liaison and financial process perspectives
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborates across all functions within the Company and co-ordinate activities with various peers (e.g., Clinical, Manufacturing, and Commercial Operations, Legal, Investor Relations, International, IT, HR) and throughout the Company's global operations. Develop close relationship with Company's Global Strategic Sourcing function.
  • Team Leadership and Development: Provides leadership, mentorship and coaching to the accounting organization that fosters an environment of problem solving and improved business practices, and attracts and retains superior financial talent. Continually recruit, retain, develop, and motivate a top-notch group of global finance and accounting professionals dedicated to actively driving and supporting the Company's vision and mission.
  • Operating Complexity: Be comfortable and highly competent in providing strong insight in a complex operating environment, inclusive of multiple products, sophisticated product analysis and development pathways, advanced manufacturing and distribution paradigms, legal/patent nuance, novel research and clinical pathways.
  • Executive Presence: Presents quarterly to Alnylam's Audit Committee highlighting relevant accounting updates to ensure trust and confidence in financial disclosures and quarterly results.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 15+ years of relevant accounting and finance experience, with a mix of public accounting and global public company experience, ideally within a commercial biopharmaceutical global company environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, required, Master's of Business Administration is strongly preferred
  • Must be a licensed Certified Public Accountant
  • Ideal candidate must have worked recently as a corporate controller or Chief Accounting Officer.
  • Strong proven knowledge of US GAAP and SEC rules and regulations as well as strong understanding of legal and regulatory environments.
  • Experience with multinational operations (e.g., foreign currency accounting, inter-company accounting, global tax structure knowledge) which have been run using ERP systems such as SAP or Oracle.
  • A demonstrated track record of serving as a business partner to senior leadership teams with the ability to influence key business decisions and track performance against key objectives.
