DEPARTMENT: Student Services JOB TITLE: School Counselor - High School REQUIREMENTS:Education Level:Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling in Secondary EducationCertification/Licensure:Nebraska Teaching CertificateExperience Desired:Minimum of three years successful teaching experienceOther Requirements:Knowledge of personal, social, career, and academic development of adolescents.Ability to consult with staff and parents.

Ability to coordinate services to meet student needs. Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms. REPORTS TO: High School Guidance Director/Building Administrator ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The essential functions of each employee's position includes (1) regular, dependable in-person attendance on the job; (2) the ability to perform the identified tasks and to possess and utilize the identified knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the identified work activities; and (3) the ability to perform the physical requirements of their specific job description.

Basic:Provide a comprehensive guidance and counseling program for students in grades 9-12 and provide services to meet the needs of an assigned caseload; consult with teachers, administrators, and parents to effectively help students in their academic, career, personal, and social development; provide support to other High School programs. Frequent:Teach the High School guidance curriculum: Conduct developmental guidance lessons; consult with and/or be a resource person to facilitate the infusion of guidance content into the regular education curriculum.Guide groups and individual students through the development of educational and career plans. Assist grades 9-12 students in evaluating their achievement and planning their High School program of study.Coordinate testing program and interpret test results.

Coordinate ASVAB and PLAN testing day with school staff and military personnel; facilitate student post-secondary testing (PSAT, SAT I and II, ACT, ASSET, and COMPASS); interpret standardized test results information to students, parents, and teachers; discuss with groups and individual students the application of test results to educational and career planning.Provide response and counseling services to students regarding academic, career, social, and personal concerns: Recurring issues at the High School level include academic failure, attendance and behavior problems, peer problems, family concerns, child abuse, substance abuse, suidicde threats and attempts, and sexuality issues.Consult with teachers, staff, and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of individual students. Participate in staffings; conduct and/or facilitate conferences with administrators, teachers, students, and parents; assist families with school-related concerns including appropriate class placement.Refer students and/or parents to appropriate community resources such as school psychologist, nurse, administrators, community based mental health professionals, service agencies, and physicians.Coordinate, conduct, or participate in activities which contribute to the effective operation of the school. Sponsor academic achievement awards; participate on building committees; solicit information regarding student placement; provide input regarding the master schedule; assist with preparations for commencement; and help administrators and faculty members implement High School programs.Evaluate and revise the building guidance program.

Review and modify the guidance program calendar; evaluate guidance curriculum activities.Pursue professional growth. Attend state and local staff development programs; join professional organizations; attend relevant conferences; take post graduate courses.Maintain a scholarship system. Publish scholarship information for students and their families through a monthly scholarship bulletin, answer questions regarding application processes, and provide information for scholarship purposes as requested.Facilitate the transfer of students to and from the Learning Center Program.

Educate students and their parents regarding the alternative program and schedule dually enrolled students.Maintain student records. Update career planning folders as well as cum folders. Complete graduation credit checks.
