Position Summary:
Interlochen Center for the Arts seeks a School Counselor, School Social Worker, or School Psychologist to join our collaborative school mental and student support team. This role works closely with the Director of Student Support Services, student support team, staff, faculty, and parents to support social, emotional, and learning needs of students at Interlochen Center for the Arts, including students at Interlochen Arts Academy (grades 9-12) and Interlochen Arts Camp students (grades 3-12). Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Collaborate with students, families, faculty, student affairs, health services, and administration and outside service provider(s) about individual students and groups to support students and deepen stakeholder's understanding of students and develop best practices and supports to educate the whole child. This may include providing direct instruction to small groups or classes of students.
Provide confidential short and long-term individual and group counseling services to students struggling with academic, artistic, developmental, emotional, and/or behavioral issues
Work in classrooms, small groups, and with individual students in the areas of friendships, social skills, conflict resolution, self-control, communication, personal safety, coping skills, grief and loss support.
Collaboratively develop intervention plans and recommend strategies to support students together with the classroom and residence life faculty.
Work with the school psychologist, learning specialist, school counselors, and other faculty on division-wide and whole school mental health programming.
Work with students and the faculty of students who have learning disabilities and executive functioning challenges 1:1 and in classroom environments to facilitate their learning
Communicate with families about pertinent issues affecting the community
Plan and deliver crisis intervention when needed including student safety assessments
Work with families and the Student Support team to onboard and design appropriate supports for newly enrolled students with disabilities
Maintain and uphold confidentiality with student and family interactions
Attend regular Student Problem-Solving "Core Team" Meetings and other faculty meetings
Essential Duties:
Act as a point person for supporting high needs students. This includes working collaboratively with the students, families, faculty, staff, the student support team, administration, and off-campus providers to assess the type of assistance and resources a student needs and develop or facilitate the development of appropriate supports - and possible support plans.
Meet regularly with students to build or strengthen their support systems and self-advocacy for on-campus resources.
Provide brief drop-in/solutions, focused counseling, and/or a safe space for students who need support.
Identify and reduce obstacles to students accessing assistance for academic, social, or emotional concerns.
Help to track and support students who are away from campus on extended leaves.
Develop and support the implementation of whole school mental health initiatives.
Hold group counseling sessions around various topics or affinity groups.
Serve in an on-call capacity to triage emergent mental health issues and assess student safety.
Ability to work occasional weekends or evenings
Participate in evaluation of student applications.
Maintain documentation on student growth and learning
Seeks the best use of materials, equipment and staff to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
Complies with ICA policies/procedures and acts as a good steward of ICA finances.
Respects the culture, diversity and rights of all students, their families and the community.
Prioritizes duties in a manner consistent with organizational objectives and growth.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education:
Master's degree or higher in School Social Work, School Psychology or School Counseling, or the equivalent. Licensure or certification in Social Work, Psychology, or Counseling in the state of Michigan or the ability to attain/transfer certification.
Experience:
Direct experience within a school environment and/or working with children of all ages recommended.
3+ years classroom experience preferred.
Specific experience working with eating disorders or substance abuse preferred.
Equipment Familiarity: Familiarity with computer systems, google software suite, and email systems, as well as work with learning management systems and student information systems
Certifications, Licenses or Special Training:
Must meet and maintain background screening requirements for as detailed in policy 12.HR.01 Pre-Employment and Employee Background Checks.
Valid driver's license and driving record that meets the eligibility requirements of ICA's insurance carrier (for all positions requiring driving).
