Who we are:

Founded in 1937, MSU Federal Credit Union is owned and operated by members of the Michigan State University and Oakland University communities. We offer financial services to MSU and OU faculty, staff, students, alumni association members, and their families as well as a variety of select employee groups.

A day in the life of a Business Systems Analyst

The Business Systems Analyst is a cross-functional role that will partner with the business domain area leadership to proactively identify areas of technological need and act as a liaison between business units and the technical teams at the Credit Union. This position assists departments with workflow analysis and applying technology and sound business practices to improve efficiency/productivity. This position will assist with the refinement of project vision and requirements, selection of software or solutions, communicate project requirements to the technical teams, and assist with rollouts of solutions.

Work Location

This position is a hybrid role (remote option available) with a combination of working both onsite at the Headquarters 2 building in East Lansing and remotely. A schedule of expected onsite and remote work days will be discussed during the interview process.

An offer of employment with MSU Federal Credit Union and affiliates is contingent upon the agreed work arrangement (onsite/hybrid/remote) and work location. MSU Federal Credit Union may or may not be able to accommodate temporary or permanent changes to work arrangements or allow employment outside the city and/or state of residency in which the new hire resides at the time of offered employment.

Compensation & Benefits -

  • Salary Range:
    • Level 1: $65,000-$80,000+ dependent on experience
    • Level 2: $80,000-$95,000+ dependent on experience
    • Senior: $95,000-$110,000+ dependent on experience

Responsibilities

  • Business Systems Analyst I:

    • Partner with leadership across the Credit Union’s business domains to determine technology needs that support their business strategies; help them analyze their business needs to determine if it is best to use an existing solution, buy a new solution from a vendor, to customize a vendor solution, or to build a custom solution in house.
    • Serve as a trusted IT advisor to assigned departments, building relationships with the leadership and team members of the department.
    • Establish a high level of personal credibility and build strong relationship with team members and departments in the Credit Union.
    • Recommend modifications to business processes and technology to reduce user problems, increase efficiency, and provide superior service to members.
    • Proactively suggest new techniques and technologies to improve system processes and systems reliability.
    • Maintain current knowledge of all technology systems and solutions that the Credit Union provides and look for ways to integrate them into the business domains you are partnered with to address business needs.
    • Work directly with project stakeholders to formulate and communicate their business vision, gather initial requirements and constraints, and to scope the project.
    • Facilitate communication between project stakeholders and technical resources by translating and simplifying the business requirements into actionable pieces that can be readily acted upon by the technical resources and by translating the technical questions and complexities into something the project stakeholders will understand.
    • Work with project stakeholders to validate their requirements and analysis models; serve as a liaison between project stakeholders and testing.
    • Facilitate requirements gathering and document application solution requirements.
    • Represent stakeholders in technical project meetings and obtain answers and verify decisions with the stakeholders on behalf of the technical team.
    • Develop user acceptance criteria.
    • Creates documentation including detailed requirements, process flows, acceptance criteria, project vision statement.
    • Work closely with other Information Technology teams and other Credit Union departments; coordinating projects that need shared resources, determining and resolving any overlapping impacts on various systems, and ensuring good working relationships between all employees. Will be asked to lead project teams on
    • Participate in demos and analysis of new software.
    • Establish project objectives and plans by coordinating and collaborating with departments and senior management.
    • Develop relationships with third party vendors as necessary for assigned projects, including communicating via email, phone, etc., arranging meetings, and discussing questions and requirements in order to complete assigned projects.
    • Prepare consolidated project status reporting.
    • Participate in training activities within the department/branches/human resources, as well as training outside the department; such training helps to ensure staff compliance with Credit Union policies and state and federal regulations and laws.
    • Perform other duties and assist other employees, as assigned.

    Business Systems Analyst II:

    • All duties and responsibilities of Business Systems Analyst I.
    • Provide leadership in research, analysis, recommendation and implementation of complex applications.
    • Prepare and present business proposals for evaluation and selection of application systems, development of system enhancements and acquisition of new technologies to satisfy complex business information requirements.
    • Advanced research of applications and current technical trends.
    • Keep management advised of any on-going problems not being resolved satisfactorily or that prevent the fulfillment of responsibilities.
    • Initiate discussions and partner with management, security, and various business units to evaluate, define, and satisfy business needs.
    • Participate in short and long-term planning for application portfolio management and roadmaps.

    Senior Business Systems Analyst:

    • All duties and responsibilities of Business Systems Analyst II.
    • Maintain a working knowledge of credit union operations and an in-depth knowledge of current and emerging applications, technologies and best practices. Develop familiarity with applicable state and federal regulations.
    • Project management in directing efforts to solve complex information requirements. Activities range from analysis of workflow, system development and quality assurance processes.
    • Provide leadership and work direction to other staff members in research, analysis, recommendation, and implementation of complex applications.
    • Identify and evaluate industry trends in applications to serve as a source of information and advice for credit union management.

  • Business Systems Analyst I:

    • A Bachelors of Arts or Science degree with three to five years’ experience in information technology is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to demonstrate the ability to perform the job.
    • Strong ability to communicate with project stakeholders and team members, provide time estimates and progress updates, take initiative to anticipate, discuss, and resolve problems on projects, and meet deadlines.
    • A high level of interpersonal skills, with a focus on rapport-building, listening, questioning skills, and ability to relate to other people at their knowledge level.
    • Understanding of principles, methods, and techniques used in all phases of installation, administration and maintenance of IT and Business Systems.
    • Ability to work well with all stakeholders, including employees and leadership as well as software/IT vendors.
    • Able to learn and show growing knowledge of the business and the critical applications utilized by the Credit Union.
    • Experience in eliciting, organizing and communicating requirements.
    • Experience working on agile teams and understanding of agile culture preferred.
    • Possesses project management skills and experience; working with complex IT projects preferred.
    • Must be able to attend conferences, seminars, and training sessions out of the area.
    • Ability to use good judgment to solve problems efficiently and accurately and handle complex details.
    • Ability to meet deadlines in a timely manner and collaborate effectively in teams with all levels of the organization.

    • Experience in a technical leadership role, whether formal or informal, within complex projects.
    • Growing knowledge of credit union and financial industry products including rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, with a focus on rapport-building, listening, questioning skills, and ability to relate to people at their knowledge level.
    • Ability to plan, prioritize and support multiple concurrent projects.
    • Increased awareness of business issues and how these issues affect overall project delivery.
    • Strong knowledge of critical applications and programs utilized by the credit union.
    • Proven ability to decide and implement strategies that are in line with overall technology strategy.
    • Ability to independently analyze and understand how various technical solutions interrelate and interface in order to solve business problems.

    Senior Business Systems Analyst:

    • Advanced knowledge of overall business processes utilized by the Credit Union.
    • In depth knowledge of business processes for assigned departments.
    • Project management experience with complex projects.
    • Exceptional coordination, organization, and communication abilities.
    • Highly organized and have superior analytical problem solving skills.
    • An increased ability to analyze complex situations and problems and is able to perform the necessary research to arrive at innovative solutions.
    • Ability to recognize business issues early on, how they affect overall project delivery, and take action as necessary to reduce or eliminate disruption in service or project completion.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • May be required to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to operate standard office technology, equipment and tools, which may include many hours of computer and phone usage.
  • Occasionally needs to move about inside of office area
  • Exposure to potentially hazardous condition, i.e. robbery. Receives detailed instructions and procedures to be followed to minimize the exposure
  • This position is able to work in remote, hybrid or onsite working arrangements.
